Prep roundup: Waseca tops New Ulm in prep tennis, GFW, New Ulm, NU Cathedral win in volleyball

Waseca 6, New Ulm 1

WASECA — Waseca defeated New Ulm on Tuesday in a Big South Conference girls’ tennis match.

Malia Emerson earned the Eagles’ lone win at No. 4 singles with a 6-1, 2-6, 17-15 win.

Emma Maudal lost at No 1 singles 6-2, 6-1, Makia Otto lost at No. 2 singles 6-0, 6-1 and Abby Hietala lost at No 3 singles 3-6, 6-3, 6-1.

Kellyn Emerson and Hannah Blumhoefer lost at No. 1 doubles 6-4, 6-2, Abbey Frauenholtz and Carli Botten lost at No. 2 doubles 6-3, 3-6, 6-2 and Bethany Janssen and Ashtyn Wiltscheck lost 6-0, 6-2 at No. 3 doubles.

New Ulm (2-6) will host Blue Earth Area on Tuesday.

Prep volleyball

GFW 3, LP/HT 0

WINSTED — Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop swept Lester Prairie/Holy Trinity 25-11, 25-15, 25-18 on Tuesday in a nonconference volleyball match.

Miah Busse had 11 digs and five kills for GFW. Hannah Panitzke added 13 digs with five kills and Hannah Thorsen had 13 set assists and five digs. Jordan Rettig had 11 set assists and six digs.

GFW will play at Cedar Mountain on Thursday.

New Ulm 3, Fairmont 1

FAIRMONT — New Ulm defeated Fairmont 18-25, 25-20, 25-23, 25-19 in Big South Conference volleyball action on Tuesday.

Izzy Wolkow had 35 set assists and seven digs for the Eagles and Ashlyn Donner had 11 kills, 10 digs. Madeline Gag had 11 kills and three blocks.

Nora Windschill had 10 kills, seven digs and three blocks.

Cathedral 3, Sleepy Eye 1

SLEEPY EYE — New Ulm Cathedral improved to 9-3 as the Greyhounds downed Sleepy Eye 25-22, 25-22, 25-27, 25-19 on Tuesday in a Tomahawk Conference volleyball match.

Emily Franta led Cathedral with 26 digs. Sara Mohr added 13 kills and four blocks while Mary Herzog had 10 kills.

For Sleepy Eye, Brittany Dittbenner had 20 digs and seven kills. Macy Schenk had six kills and Madi Krueger had 24 digs.

Cathedral will participate in the St. James Area Tournament on Saturday. Sleepy Eye (3-5) will travel to Minnesota Valey Lutheran on Thursday.

WORTHINGTON — Worthington rolled to a 6-0 Big South Conference boys’ soccer win over New Ulm on Tuesday.

Josh Rakoczy had 14 saves for the Eagles.
