Column: Joey Batt named Player of the Year in AAU basketball

Joey Batt, a senior at New Ulm High School, has been named the Prep Girls’ Hoops Class of 2019 AAU Player of the Year.

Batt was chosen over Sara Scalia of Stillwater, who received a scholarship from the University of Minnesota, and also over Kallie Theisen of Wayzata, who will play basketball next year at South Dakota State.

Batt, who will play basketball next year at Minnesota State-Mankato and played for the Minnesota Rise, was chosen on the First Team All-Star team that included both Scalia and Theisen, who both played for North Tartan.

Also selected on the first team were Taylor McAuley of Centennial and played for Centennial High School. She will attend college at Drake. Elaina Jones from DeLaSalle, who will play basketball next year at Idaho State, wraps up the team.

The Rise went 33-7 in the summer.

STEEL START SEASON FRIDAY: The New Ulm Steel begin their 2018-19 season Friday when they head to Breezy Point to take on the North Stars in the NA3HL opener for both teams.

Right now, the Steel have four lines.

On one line, Kolb has returning player Jarrett Cammarata centering a line with newcomer Jordan Cooper and returnee Jack Parks. On another line, he has returning Michael Smits centering a line with veteran Brian Oare and Carson Sandwick.

Another first-year player, Michael Savelkoul, will center the line of Hunter Johnson and James Spaargen. Johnson is a returnee, while Spaargen is a first-year player.

Jacob Halvorson centers a line that includes Nate Andrate and Keegan Bauman.

The current defensemen this year are all also new faces.

New there are Sam Avd, along with Baylor Hudson, Valters Midegs, Deniss Berdniks and Joshua Hodgkinson.
