Prep roundup: GFW football team wins 1st game since 2014 season

WINDOM — Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop blanked Windom Area on Friday in a South Central District football contest. It was the first victory for the Thunderbirds since 2014.

Evan Martin scored two touchdowns, a 4-yard run and a 5-yard run. McKray Schmidt had a 2-yard run and Ryan Lavrenz scored on a 45-yard run.

Tyler Hopp rushed for 110 yards on 15 carries for GFW.

Martin had 10 rushes for 21 yards and the two touchdowns. Schmidt had 13 rushes for 69 yards and one TD. He caught one pass for 42 yards. Lavernz added four carries for 52 yards and a touchdown.

Schmidt had 7.5 tackles, five of them were solo and five assists.

GFW (1-0) will host Maple River on Friday.

Lanesboro 12,

Madelia 7

MADELIA — Lanesboro defeated Madelia on Friday in 9-man South football action.

Logan Anderson scored the Blackhawk’s lone touchdown on a 30-yard run.

Lanesboro had three interceptions and Dain Uhde of Madelia had one fumble recovery.

Madelia (1-1) will travel to face Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s on Friday.

HBC 28, CM/C 6

MORGAN — Hills-Beaver Creek defeated Cedar Mountain/Comfrey 28-6 on Friday in a 9-man South District football game.

Eli Samuelson ran 35 yards for CM/C’s lone touchdown. Samuelson was 6 for 16 passing for 27 yards. He rushed 16 times for 98 yards with the one touchdown. Samuelson added five solo tackles and three assists.

Brady Forbrook had 7.5 tackles, six of them were solo. Kaleb Cornwell had four solo tackles and six assists.

CM/C will play at Russell-Tyler-Ruthton on Friday.

Wabasso 28,

Lac Qui Parle Valley 21

WABASSO — Wabasso edged Lac Qui Parle Valley on Friday 28-21 in a Southwest District football game.

Nick Marotzke scored three of the Rabbits’ four touchdowns. He had an 85-yard run, a 28-yard reception and a 12-yard run. Lance Wagner scored Wabasso’s other touchdown on an 8-yard run.

Marotzke rushed five times for 130 yards and three total touchdowns and also had 35 yards on two catches. Wagner had 23 rushes for 110 yards and one touchdown.

Wabasso quarterback Carter Benz was 9 for 14 for 92 yards and a passing touchdown.

Ryan Liebl had 8.5 tackles, three of them were solo. He had 11 assists.

Wabasso will play at Yellow Medicine East on Friday.

NEW ULM — Mankato East blanked New Ulm on Friday in nonconference boys’ tennis action.

Goaltender Josh Rakoczy had 11 saves for the Eagles.

New Ulm will play at Waseca on Tuesday.

Girls’ tennis

Hutchinson 7,

New Ulm 0

NEW ULM– Hutchinson shut out New Ulm on Friday in a nonconference girls’ tennis match.

Makiah Otto lost at No. 1 singles 6-0, 6-1, Abby Hietala lost at No. 2 singles 6-4, 6-1, Malia Emerson lost at No 3 singles 6-2, 6-0 and Bethany Janssen lost at No. 4 singles 6-0, 6-0.

Hannah Blumhoefer and Kellyn Emerson lost at No. 1 doubles 6-2, 6-0, Abbey Frauenholtz and Lydia King lost at No. 2 doubles 6-3, 6-1, and Carli Botten and Ashtyn Wiltscheck lost at No. 3 doubles 6-2, 6-1.

New Ulm will host River Valley on Thursday.
