Knights ranked 6th in UMAC football preseason poll

NEW ULM — The Martin Luther College football team was picked to finish sixth in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) this season in league’s preseason poll released Tuesday.

The Knights finished last season 5-5 overall and 4-5 in UMAC play, good for a tie for sixth place in the conference standings.

MLC returns 18 starters from the 2017 team, including 10 starters on the offensive side of the ball. Senior Second Team All-UMAC wide receiver Josh Arndt leads the skill positions, while senior guard Josh Frailing also returns after an all-conference season to lead the offensive line. Sophomore Zach Bloomquist returns at quarterback after a promising first season.

Defensively, the Knights return eight starters, including their top three tacklers from last season. Second Team All-UMAC performers Tristan Pankow (linebacker) and Joe Herrewig (defensive back) both return after strong sophomore seasons, while junior Keith Brassow led the team in sacks (4.0) and tackles for loss (10.0) last season.

MLC finished the poll with 28 total points. MacMurray finished first in the poll with 57 total points, while St. Scholastica, Northwestern and Greenville also received first-place votes.
