MANKATO — Unfortunately for New Ulm VFW Silver, the hot hitting didn’t carry over to Tuesday.

Mapleton secured a spot in next week’s District 2 tournament with a 4-2 victory against New Ulm Silver at Franklin Rogers Park.

Evan Wiltscheck took the season-ending loss. He went 3 2/3 innings and allowed four runs. Silver finished the season 8-19.

“We had the opportunities, we couldn’t get that key hit,” New Ulm coach Bob Weier said. “That one inning we had the bases loaded but couldn’t get any runs across.”

In the bottom of the third, Mapleton’s Joe Bennett had a bases-loaded triple to put his team up 3-0. He scored on a sacrifice fly to center to make it 4-0.

New Ulm got on the board in the fourth after Wiltscheck scored on a grounder to first.

New Ulm added to its total in the fifth after a sac fly scored Preston Helget to make it 4-2.

In Silver’s first game of the day, Caleb Arndt took the loss. He went 2 1/3 innings, allowing nine runs on four hits in a 10-0 loss to Mankato in five innings.

Mankato got on the board with a single run in the bottom of the first. New Ulm threatened in the first, loading the bases with one out. But Mankato starter Brandon Schendel got a strikeout and a flyout to left to negate the threat.

Mankato added to the lead in the bottom of the second with a nine-run inning. Nick Stoffel drilled a three-run double to left to make it 4-0. He scored on a wild pitch, and one pitch later Schendel hit a hard grounder that was misplayed at third, allowing Mankato’s sixth run to score.

Dalton Dodge continued the long inning with a three-run double and he scored on a throwing error to give Mankato a 10-0 lead.
