MANKATO — New Ulm Cathedral snagged a rare triple play in the fifth inning of Saturday’s Section 2A baseball elimination bracket game against Cleveland.

Unfortunately for the Greyhounds, that was about the only thing that went right in that inning. Prior to that triple play, the No. 8-seeded Cleveland thumped the No. 3-seeded Cathedral for six runs in the fifth, carrying the Clippers (9-7) to an 8-3 win at Franklin Rogers Park.

The Greyhounds end their season at 14-5, while the Clippers move on to play Springfield at 5 p.m. on Tuesday at Franklin Rogers Park.

Despite the season coming to an end, Mark Schommer, the starting pitcher for Cathedral on Saturday, said that the future is bright for Cathedral.

“It ends our season, but it’s been a great season with these guys,” Schommer said. “It hurts now, but we’ll look to the future, and the future look’s really bright. Next season, there’s no doubt in my mind that we have a great shot at going to state.”

Taking a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the fourth after a two-run double to shallow center by Sam Knowles, things were starting to look up for Cathedral. The Greyhounds were hitless up until that inning and finished the game with three hits.

Josh Seidl and Aaron Portner got the only other Cathedral hits in the game.

The fifth inning is when Cleveland took advantage of two Greyhound errors and added three hits and three walks off of Schommer for six runs. Schommer pitched four innings in the loss for Cathedral, allowing five earned runs on six hits and four walks.

He also got three strikeouts, all in the second inning.

The inning came to an end after Nate Hauser took over on the mound with no outs and managed to escape the inning after a 3-3-6 triple play. Hauser pitched three innings in relief, allowing one earned run on a hit and a walk.

Austin Plonsky got the win for the Clippers, going all seven inning and surrendering just one earned run with four strikeouts.

Tony Geiger scored the final run for Cathedral on an error in the seventh inning after leading off with a walk.

With the high school season coming to an end for the Cathedral baseball team, Schommer is looking forward to improving in the summer with teammates.

“Summer ball for the majority of our team, so we’re all going to get better there and come back even stronger next year,” Schommer said.
