Area roundup: Wabasso baseball defeats LQPV to move on in 3A playoffs

Wabasso 5, LQPV 2

MILROY — The Wabasso baseball team advanced to Saturday in the 3A playoffs after a 5-2 win over Lac Qui Parle Valley on Wednesday.

The Rabbits will now take on Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg at noon on Saturday in Milroy.

The Rabbits had two hits each from Nick Altermatt and Will Carlson, with Altermatt adding an RBI, three runs scored and three stolen bases.

Jacob Plaetz also had a double for Wabasso and an RBI. Altermatt picked up the win for Wabasso on the mound, pitching 4 2/3 innings while striking out 12 with no runs allowed.

Edgerton 4, Wabasso 3

Wabasso fell to Edgerton/SWC 4-3 in the 3A championship game on Thursday.

Emily Benz took the loss on the mound, giving up four runs. She also had an RBI single in the game. Megan Rothmeier was 3 for 4 with two RBIs.

Wabasso collected nine total hits in the game.

The Rabbits end their season with a record of 13-11.

Section 2A girls

MANKATO — Springfield (384), Cedar Mountain (434), Alden-Conger (450) and Madelia (452) all advanced to Day 2 on Monday as teams after Day 1 of the girls’ Section 2A golf tournament on Thursday at North Links Golf Course.

Also making it to Day 2 as area individuals are New Ulm Cathedral’s Kayla Goblirsch (84) and Emma Henle (114), and Minnesota Valley Lutheran’s Avery Weisensel (115) and Nadine Clobes (116). Sleepy Eye United sends Ashtyn Tauer (110) to Monday, while Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop sends Annie Pomplun (113).

Amateur baseball

Late Wednesday

Essig 4, Courtland 3

ESSIG — The Essig Bluejays eked by the Courtland Cubs 4-3 on Wednesday night in amateur baseball action.

Jay Helget got the complete-game win on the mound for the Bluejays with nine strikeouts. He walked two and gave up four hits for three earned runs.

Chase Meyer got the loss for the Cubs despite fanning 12 in eight innings. He allowed three earned runs, walked seven and gave up six hits.

Alex Guggisberg led the Bluejays with two hits, while Jordan Guggisberg added a hit and two runs scored. Colton Gemmill had a double and an RBI for Essig.

For the Cubs, Keith Besemer added a hit and two RBIs, while Matt Stein had a hit and an RBI.
