Springfield moves on, defeats Madelia in 2A playoffs

Springfield 13, Madelia 3

SPRINGFIELD — Springfield defeated Madelia 13-3 on Thursday in a nonconference baseball game.

The winning pitcher was Springfield’s Hunter Mathiowetz, who had five strikeouts and allowed three hits and two runs.

The losing pitcher was Madelia’s Logan Anderson, who had six strikeouts and gave up 11 hits and 11 runs.

Springfield’s leading batters were Decker Scheffler, who went 3 for 4 with three runs and six RBIs, Tanner Vogel, who went 3 for 5 with two runs and two RBIs and Henry Scheitel, who went 2 for 3 with three runs and one RBI.

Madelia was led by Luke Hennis, who went 3 for 3 with two runs and Jed Altenberg, who went 2 for 3 with three RBIs.

Springfield hosts the winner of Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart vs. Sleepy Eye game at 5 p.m. on Tuesday.

TRUMAN — Martin Luther/Granada-Huntley-East Chain/Truman ended Sleepy Eye St. Marys’ season in the Section 2A playoffs on Thursday.

Game stats were not submitted to The Journal. St. Mary’s ends its season at 3-15.

St. Mary’s 10, Springfield 0

SLEEPY EYE — Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s handed Springfield a Section 2A softball playoff loss on Thursday. Springfield will now play Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton in the elimination bracket at 10 a.m. on Saturday at Caswell Park.

For St. Mary’s, Jody Hansen went 2 for 2 with a run scored and two RBIs and two stolen bases. Ali Beltz was 1 for 2 with a run and three RBIs.

Cassie Heinrichs was 1 for 3 with an RBI and a triple.

Brittany Rogotzke was the losing pitcher, she gave up eight hits, had seven walks, and had one strikeout. Mariah Kirschstein pitched the fourth inning in relief and gave up one hit, had 1 strike out and walked none.

St. Mary’s (18-1) moves on to face No. 4 seed Sleepy Eye at 10 a.m. on Saturday at Caswell Park.

Sleepy Eye 2, JWP 0

SLEEPY EYE — No. 4 seed Sleepy Eye defeated No. 5 Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton in Section 2A softball action on Thursday.

No stats were submitted to The Journal.

The Indians will now face No. 1 seed Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s at 10 a.m. on Saturday at Caswell Park.
