Area roundup: New Ulm track and field teams have solid showing on Tuesday

WORTHINGTON — The New Ulm boys’ and girls’ track and field teams both had a solid performance on Tuesday at Trojan Field in Worthington in Class AA action.

The girls finished second with a score of 100.5, behind Luverne (116), while the boys took third (98), behind Marshall in second (125) and Worthington in first (143).

There were eight teams in both Class A girls and boys and Class AA girls and boys.

For the New Ulm girls, Paige Kalis finished second in the 100-meter dash (13.21), second in the 200 (27.18) and second in the long jump (15-10.50). In the 1,600, Kaye Rysdahl took third (5:52.05).

Jessica Miller finished fifth in the shot put (31-03), while Olivia Owens and Morgan Eikanger took second and fourth, respectively, in the high jump (5-02, 4-08).

For the boys, Sean Howk tied for third in the 100 with teammate Wyatt Huard (11.88). Howk also finished fourth in the 400 (53.73), just ahead of teammate Justin Fuhrman in fifth (53.74).

Carson Giefer took third in the 3,200 (11:02.49), and Matthew Schlieman took fourth in the 110-meter hurdles (17.31). The boys relay team consisting of Howk, Michael Princewill Tardzenyuy, Jack Howard and Huard took first in the 4×100 with a time of 45.87.

Connor Gag finished third in the shot put (42-02) and third in the discus (124-01). Connor Foley tied for fourth in the high jump (5-04).

Huard also took fifth in the long jump (19-07).

Prep baseball

Wabasso 7, MVL 2

WABASSO — Wabasso took down Minnesota Valley Lutheran 7-2 on Wednesday in Tomahawk Conference baseball action.

Kyle Jacobson got the win for the Rabbits, pitching six innings and allowing five hits, two walks and one unearned run with five strikeouts.

Theodore Giefer received the loss for MVL, pitching 5 2/3 innings and allowing seven hits, four walks and six earned runs with four strikeouts.

Tony Franta led the Wabasso bats with a pair of singles, while Jacob Plaetz added a double and Jayden Eis had a single and an RBI.

MVL was led by Jordan Fischer, who had a single and a double, Leyton Brau, who had a pair of base hits and Mason Cox, who added a double and an RBI.

MVL (4-8, 4-7) hosts New Ulm Cathedral at Mueller Park Thursday for a doubleheader beginning at 4:30 p.m., while Wabasso (6-4, 6-4) next is at Red Rock Central at 7 p.m. Friday.

Prep softball

Madelia 18, ML/GHEC/T 3

TRUMAN — Madelia dominated Martin Luther/Granada-Huntley-East Chain/Truman on Wednesday 18-3 in Valley Conference softball action.

Madelia (2-10, 2-6) was led by Courtney Davis, who was 2 for 3 with two RBIS and Jessica Baumgartner, who was 2 for 3 with an RBI and two runs scored. Brianna Pietsch added a hit and three RBIs.

The Blackhawks also got a hit and an RBI each from Briana Ardolf, Lizzie Cooling, Madison Mueller and Blair VanZee, with Mueller’s hit being a triple.

Davis also pitched all five innings for Madelia in the win, allowing four hits, three runs and four walks with five strikeouts.

Madelia competes in the Valley Conference Showcase on Friday.

MADELIA — Madelia hosted Martin County West for a golf meet on Wednesday at the Madelia Golf Course, where the Madelia girls picked up a win.

Madelia’s Ally Missling was the medalist for the girls, shooting a 52. Also for the Blackhawks, Cortney DeVlaeminck shot a 56, good for a tie in second place.

The boys’ medalist was Dawson Weber of MCW, who shot a 41. Madelia’s top golfer for the boys was Carson Wihlm, who shot a 43, good for third, and Jared Henry, who shot a 46 for fourth place.
