Steady offense leads New Ulm past Fairmont

NEW ULM — Sometimes a baseball team can have one big inning and use that to gain a win.

Or they can do what the New Ulm Eagles did Tuesday afternoon against Fairmont in a Big South Conference game.

Slowly but surely earn a win.

The Eagles scored single runs in each of the first four innings before scoring two runs in the fifth as they ran their conference mark to 11-0 and 13-1 overall with a 6-3 win over the Cardinals at Mueller Park.

Andrew Peters got the win for the Eagles. He went 6 1/3 innings and allowed all three runs. He allowed six hits and struck out six.

Brandon Seidl took over for Peters and got the save.

Brady Allen took the loss for Fairmont (4-3; 8-6). He was charged with four runs.

Hunter Ranweiler led the nine-hit attack with three hits. Peters added two hits and drove in two runs.

“Tonight our offense carried us,” New Ulm coach Kevin Briggs said. “And I am proud of that. Sometimes that is lacking, but tonight we scrapped and put pressure on and scored in every inning except the sixth. When you can do that, you can put more pressure on a team and come out with a win.”

While the Eagles took a 3-0 lead with single runs in the first three innings, Briggs felt they could have done more.

In the first, Ranweiler singled, stole second and came home on a Peters base hit.

In the third, it was a walk to Sam Berg that resulted in a run. Berg stole second and went to third on a Jaden Domeier sacrifice bunt. Tyler Roufs walked and when he was caught stealing second, Berg raced home.

But Briggs was disappointed in the second inning when they scored only one run — that on a T.J. Sweere sacrifice fly.

“We had the bases loaded with no outs and only scored one run,” he said. “But we kept the pressure on them.”

Fairmont cut the lead to 3-2 in the fourth on a two-run triple from Allen.

New Ulm added another solo run in the bottom of the fourth when Ranweiler scored on a base hit by Peters.

The Cards tallied their final run of the game in the top of the fifth on two New Ulm errors.

Domeier’s lead-off single in the fifth sparked a two-run inning for the Eagles.

Domeier stole second. Braden Zimmerman and Keaton Knaak both drew walks off of Josh Wolter who relieved Allen. Collin Steuber took over for Wolter and allowed a Luke Scheid sacrifice fly and an RBI double to Ranweiler for a 6-3 lead.

Fairmont threatened in the seventh but Seidl again came in and got the save.

“Andrew (Peters) did not have his best stuff tonight, but he battled through,” Briggs said. “And Brandon (Seidl) has been awesome in his role. He understands his role, he accepts his role and he excels in his role.”
