NEW ULM — Edgerton/SW MN Christian played the small ball well against New Ulm Cathedral on Saturday afternoon.

A two-run homer in the seventh inning by Edgerton’s Jasmine Jensen later broke things open as the Flying Dutchmen went on to defeat the Greyhounds 5-2 in a nonconference softball matchup at Harman Park.

Edgerton struck first with three runs in the second inning from three hits and one Cathedral (12-2) error.

Edgerton was able to make the small ball work in their half of the second inning, laying down bunt singles to get a pair of runners on board. Jazzy Prins then hit a first-pitch single into left to score both runs and advanced to second on an error during the play.

Liz Prins drove in the difference-making run in the second with a single and scored Jazzy Prins from second base.

Cathedral answered back with two runs in the third, with Brooke Landerville starting the inning off with a double. Jenna Helget kept the inning alive by scoring Landerville with an RBI single. Helget advanced to second on a defensive miscue.

“We made our best contact during this inning and took advantage of some overthrows and moved runners up,” Greyhound coach Jamie Portner said.

Josie Pautzke’s single up the middle of the field scored Helget as the Greyhounds rallied with two away. Pautzke advanced to second as the ball was thrown home for an attempt at the third out, but Helget beat the throw in. Rose Hazuka got the count to 3-0 before flying out to the center fielder, putting an end to the Cathedral offense in the third.

“We had opportunities to score in a couple of innings but just didn’t get the big hit,” Cathedral coach Bob Mertz said. “This is the kind of game that we want to play right now getting close to playoffs and [Edgerton] possibly winning out of their conference.”

The Greyhounds threatened again in the fourth and sixth innings with runners in scoring position but were held by stellar pitching from Edgerton’s Sierra Van Dyke.

Van Dyke pitched seven solid innings with nine strikeouts and gave up six hits and only one walk for the win.

Edgerton added two insurance runs in the seventh inning from a two-run shot off the bat of Jensen that carried over the left-center field fence. Edgerton put another runner in scoring position still with no outs in the inning before Greyhound pitcher Pautzke shut the door with two fly-outs and a ground ball to end the inning.

Pautzke pitched seven innings in the loss, tallying two strikeouts.

Helget and Pautzke led the Greyhounds, going 1 for 3 each with an RBI, and Landerville added a double.

Cathedral will host Minnesota Valley Lutheran at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday at Harman Park.
