Area roundup: MVL girls move on to True Team State Meet; New Ulm softball goes 1-1 on Friday

WELLS — The Minnesota Valley Lutheran girls took first place out of 15 teams on Thursday at United South Central High School in the Section A True Team Track and Field Meet. They will be moving on to the True Team State Meet next Saturday at Stillwater.

The boys team finished 10th at the meet, while Mankato Loyola/Cleveland took first with a 698.5.

For the girls, Hannah Marzinske took second in the triple jump (32-feet-3 inches), while Natasha Moreton tied for third in the high jump (28-feet-5 inches). Shylo Hilbert took second in the 200-meter dash (27.6) and third in the 100 (13.22).

Abby Nelson finished third in the 1,600-meter run (5:36.76). The girls’ relay teams took first in the 4×200 (1:52.06), third in the 4×100 (53.36) and third in the 4×800 (10:38.33).

For the boys, Izayah Harrison took first in the 100-meter dash (11.48). The boys’ relay teams took second in the 4×200 (1:38.65) and third in the 4×100 (47.71).

SLAYTON — The Wabasso girls’ track and field team took third out of 11 teams on Thursday with a 71, while the boys finished fourth with a 62.

For the girls, Emma Salfer took first in the 200-meter dash (28.80) and second in the 100 (13.81). In the 800, Lindsey Bernardy took second (2:27.90) and McKenna nelson took third (2:32.30).

In the 3,200-meter run, Chloe Haven finished first (12:52.50). The girls’ relay team took first in the 4×400 (4:21.51). In the high jump, Ashlyn Daub took third (4-04).

For the Wabasso boys, Colton Taylor had a strong day, taking second in the 200-meter dash (23.76), first in the 400 (52.56) and first in the long jump (19-04). In the shot put, Myles Zeug took first (49-09), while Isaac Schmiesing took third (41-03).

In the discus, Carl Swedzinski took first (132-10) and Scott Zollner took third (117-08).

NORTH MANAKATO –

New Ulm played in the Section Preview tournament at Caswell Park on Friday, picking up a big 8-1 win over Mankato West in its first game before falling 10-0 to Faribault in the second game.

Ashlyn Donner was the winning pitcher in Game 1, pitching all seven innings and allowing just one run on four hits. She struck out 10.

Donner also broke things open for New Ulm with a grand slam in Game 1, while Abbey Lee added a two-run homer.

Joey Batt was 3 for 5 with a run scored and Carli Botten was 3 for 5 with a run scored and an RBI.

In a tough Game 2 for New Ulm, Noelle Forstner added a hit.

The Eagles have their alumni game Saturday at 1 p.m. and are now 10-1 on the season.

JWP 16, Madelia 6

JANESVILLE — Madelia fell to Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton 16-6 on Friday in Valley Conference softball action.

The Blackhawks (1-9, 1-6) were led by Madison Mueller, who was 2 for 3 with three RBIs, a homer and two runs scored. Carissa Caraway, Briana Ardolf, Brianna Pietsch and Lizzie Cooling all added a hit with a run scored, with Cooling and Caraway also driving in a run each.

Mikayla Klinkner received the loss, giving up five earned runs on seven hits and two walks. She struck out one batter.

Madelia next travels to Minnesota Valley Lutheran for nonconference action.

Prep golf

New Ulm boys in third place after Day 1 of Mankato East two-day tournament

LESUEUR — The New Ulm boys sit in third place out of seven teams after Day 1 of the Mankato East two-day tournament at the LeSueur golf course.

Ahead of New Ulm (328) is Northfield in second place (325) and New Prague (322) in first.

Glavine Schugel and Aiden Guggisberg led New Ulm with a 77 each.

The Eagles play again Saturday at 8 a.m. at Creeks Bend golf course in New Prague.

SLEEPY EYE — The Springfield boys and girls picked up big wins in a quadrangular golf meet at Sleepy Eye ahead of Monday’s final leg of the Tomahawk Conference Golf Tournament on Thursday.

Mavrick Winkelmann and Mason Kretch of Springfield were the boys’ co-medalists, shooting a 36 each. Sleepy Eye United’s Ben Laffen led his team with a 39.

Jacob Iverson shot a 44 for Wabasso, while Blake Fosburgh, Joseph Roenholdt and Matthias Borwardt each shot a 57 for MVL.

For the girls, Springfield’s Makenna Winkelmann and Mackenzie Lothert were the co-medalists on the day, shooting a 39 each. Nadine Clobes led MVL with a 55.
