NEW ULM — Despite a rainy day, the New Ulm Cathedral boys’ golf team picked up a 172-184 victory over Cedar Mountain in a Tomahawk Conference golf meet on Tuesday at the New Ulm Country Club.

While the Cathedral boys saw success, the girls’ team fell to Cedar Mountain 204-234.

Ethan Kirchberg led the way for Cathedral as the boys’ medalist, shooting a 40, while Logan Haala finished a stroke away from his teammate with a 41.

Kirchberg said that he was proud of his efforts on the day and that the early rain didn’t bother him much.

“I played well,” Kirchberg said. “Putted very well, made shots when I needed to make shots. [The rain] wasn’t too bad. It was on and off, clubs got a little slippery, but it wasn’t too bad.”

Although Kirchberg was satisfied with his performance on Tuesday, Haala was a little tougher on himself, despite finishing just a stroke behind.

“[I did] average,” Haala said. “I think I should have putted better. Could have been better. Only in the first and second hole [the rain] affected me. Just on the full swings and stuff like that.”

After two legs of the Tomahawk Conference boys’ golf tournament, Haala individually sits in sixth place with 29.5 points, while Kirchberg is seventh with 29 points. They will both have a few days to practice and adjust before Day 3 on Monday.

As a team, the Cathedral boys sit in third place with 12 points, 4 points behind first-place Sleepy Eye United. The boys know that it’s going to be tough to catch up to SEU but are optimistic about improving on Monday.

“I think we just need to keep practicing on the range a little more and play more rounds because we haven’t been out there that much,” Haala said.

The Cedar Mountain boys were led by Chase Schiller with a 44 and Tanner Engholm with a 45.

The Cedar Mountain girls were led by Erica Bock, who shot a 45 and was the girls’ medalist. Following up Bock was Shaylee Schiller with a 51. Kayla Goblirsch led Cathedral with a 51, while Kate Klimek followed her up with a 56 for the Greyhounds.

Goblirsch is the top golfer for Cathedral in the Tomahawk Conference girls’ golf tournament after two days, posting 27 points, which is good for seventh so far. She is one point ahead of Bock.

The Cathedral girls are currently fourth after two days of the Tomahawk Conference tournament with 10 points, while the Cedar Mountain girls sit at 14 points in second, just 2 points behind the the first-place Springfield girls.

The Cathedral and Cedar Mountain girls will compete again in Day 3 of the tournament on Monday at 10 a.m. in Sleepy Eye, while the boys continue Day 3 of the tournament at 10 a.m. on Monday in Fairfax.
