Several area wrestlers advance

ST. PAUL — Sibley East’s Dayne Morton (120) had a dominant performance in his first-round matchup with Bray Olson (Kenyon-Wanamingo) on Friday at Xcel Energy Center, picking up a 17-2 tech fall at 4:41.

His success didn’t end there, though, as he advanced to Day 2 of Class A state wrestling individuals on Saturday after defeating Marc Hendricks (Ottertail Central Bulldogs) with a 10-3 decision.

Dayne Morton will participate in semifinals action on Saturday against Jace Geving (Deer River) in hopes of continuing his strong run back to the finals this year after finishing runner-up a year ago at 113 pounds.

Tommy Wentzlaff (152) also picked up a first-round victory and advanced to quarterfinals for Sibley East. Wentzlaff picked up a 13-6 decision over Hudson Hiemenz (Frazee). Andrew Schauer (195) of Sibley East won his first match by injury default over Gabe Drewes and also punched his ticket into quarterfinal action.

Wentzlaff’s quarterfinals match ended with a 5-0 decision for Zach Buseman (Blue Earth Area).

Schauer was pinned at 3:46 in his quarterfinals matchup by Dalton Wagner (Jackson County Central).

Also for Sibley East, at 106 pounds, Drayden Morton fell to Seth Goetzinger (Chatfield) by a 6-2 decision. Marshall Michienzi (Deer River) defeated Sibley East’s Derek Steele by a 3-2 decision at 113 pounds, and Gage Zieske (Osakis) won by a 5-2 decision over Sibley East’s Lincoln Carpenter at 138 pounds.

Kaden Spindler (West Central Area-Ashby-Brandon-Evansville) won by tech fall 16-1 over Logan Tesch of Sibley East at 4:59 at 160 pounds. Garrett Ploeger (Pipestone Area) won by fall over Sibley East’s Thomas Battcher at 1:18 at 182 pounds.

Finally, Nick Altermatt of Wabasso/Red Rock Central beat Sibley East’s Tim Lewis at 170 pounds, and Scot Edwards (Adrian Area) won by fall over Sibley East’s Austin Streich at 0:35 at 285 pounds.

In wrestlebacks, Drayden Morton, Carpenter, Wentzlaff, Tesch, Lewis,Battcher and Schauer each had a chance to advance to tomorrow with a win.

Wentzlaff pinned Carter Endrizzi (Aitkin) at 1:58, Drayden Morton won a 4-3 decision over Ayden Horner (Tracy-Milroy-Balaton-Westbrook-Walnut-Grove), Willie Von Ruden (Medford) won in sudden victory-1 over Carpenter, Lewis won by a 20-5 tech fall over Joe Dezelar (Badger-GB-MR), Jackson Held (Royalton-Upsala) won with a 12-0 major decision over Tesch, Michael Nelson (Dover-Eyota) 34-6 won by fall over Battcher at 1:52 and Hunter

Jennings (Triton) won by decision over Schauer 8-5.

Wabasso/Red Rock Central’s Altermatt cruises in Class A Wabasso/RRC had one wrestler advance to the semifinals on Saturday after

Nick Altermatt picked up two wins. Altermatt first pinned Sibley East’s Tim Lewis at 3:42.

Altermatt was in charge for most of the match, suplexing Lewis to the mat in the first period in dominating fashion.

Altermatt’s second match of the day was in quarterfinals action against Joe Dezelar (Badger-GB-MR). Altermatt won in the first period by injury default at 1:58. Altermatt was leading 6-0 up to Dezelar’s injury.

“You always have goals, and my goal this year was to go to the state tournament and do something,” Altermatt said. “Winning those first two matches gives me a lot of confidence to go out there and get some goals that I needed to get this year.”

Matt Ziebell (Pelican Rapids) picked up a 14-10 decision over Jared Schroepfer of Wabasso/RRC in first-round action at 160 pounds.

Redwood River Valley sends one to quarterfinals in AA RRV’s Kaleb Hasse (220) advanced to quarterfinals on Friday after pinning Blaine Bauman (Orono) at 2:13 in first-round action. Later in the quarterfinals against Sam Wamre (United Clay Becker Badgers), Hasse was beaten by a 4-3 decision.

In wrestlebacks, Hasse took on Craig Santema (Milaca-Faith Christian) and won by fall at 2:00.
