SLEEPY EYE — Sleepy Eye’s Madi Heiderscheidt led her team to a 68-35 Section 2A playoff victory against Central Minnesota Christian with 31 points on Tuesday night.

In the process, she became the Sleepy Eye High School all-time points leader for both boys’ and girls’ and has a chance to add on to her total during the playoff run.

“It is a big accomplishment and I am very proud of myself,” she said. “This shows how much effort and dedication I have given to this sport, but all the credit goes to my team.”

The Indians (23-4) move on to St. Peter to face Cedar Mountain/Comfrey at 6 p.m. on Friday.

Heiderscheidt scored 21 points in the first half, scoring 18 points from beyond the 3-point arc. The Indians hit of 7-of-15 from 3-point range in the first half.

“This shows how versatile we are when players try to key in and shows the other aspects of our game and just how deadly this team can be when we are on,” Heiderscheidt said.

The Indians came out on fire in the first minutes of the opening half, scoring 13 unanswered points with defensive takeaways by Heiderscheidt and Sarah Ibarra that turned into early points.

“Our defense has to lead to some points and get us some transition points with some lay ups and that is what happened tonight and will keep happening,” Sleepy Eye coach Ryan Hulke said.

With 6:38 left in the first half Sleepy Eye led 19-4 after Heiderscheidt hit consecutive 3-pointers.

Ibarra had a putback at the 5:30 mark as the Indians tore open a 24-6 lead before taking a 37-18 lead into half-time.

Sleepy Eye held Central Minnesota Christian with tight defense forcing the Bluejays to have to net points inside the paint against Mya Ibberson of the Indians. Ibberson held her ground with some key blocks early on and consistently had a hand on the ball the entire night.

Central Minnesota Christian put up buckets from outside the paint in the final minutes of the first half, shooting from outside early in the second trying to find points on Sleepy Eye’s court.

With about 14 minutes left in the game, Heiderscheidt’s bucket put her as the school’s scoring leader, passing the record of 1,574 points, as the school recognized her accomplishment.

“It has been a small accomplishment to get individually, right now I am just looking to my team to get to state, right now it is all about my team,” Heiderscheidt continued of the school record.

Ibarra had 12 points with eight rebounds, Brianna Polesky netted 8 points with four steals and 4 assists, Ibberson had eight rebounds with six blocks and Heiderscheidt added 10 steals with six assists.
