Sleepy Eye — Lake Crystal-Wellcome Memorial defeated Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s 67-53 in boys’ basketball nonconference action Friday night.

St. Mary’s (0-22) opened with a 6-0 lead in the very early minutes of the first half, with Collin Ludewig hitting buckets from down low.

“We played well, just that the shots wouldn’t go in, at times we wanted it more tonight,” St. Marys’ senior Dalton Meyer said.

LCWM (11-16) put up a 7-2 scoring run in the following two minutes to cut the St. Mary’s lead down.

With 11:19 still to play in the first, LCWM earned its first lead of the game at 12-11 with Evan Bergemann going 2 for 2 from the free-throw line.

Bergemann led LCWM scoring in the first half with 15 points.

St. Mary’s retook the lead for a short time when Meyer found the net from way beyond the 3-point line.

“That is the thing with 3s, one night you can’t miss and the next night you can’t make them,” Meyer said of St. Marys’ shooting struggles. “Some nights it’s your night and some nights it’s not.”

St. Mary’s lead was short lived as LCWM began to hit from all over the floor. LCWM’s Evan Mann had 9 points off the bench in the final minutes of the first half and LCWM led 37-26 at the half.

St. Mary’s came out strong to open up the second half with Nick Labat’s 6 points bringing them within 5 to trail 37-32.

LCWM found its points from the 3-point line early to regain a 10-plus point spread for most of the second half to keep the game in its hands.

St. Mary’s matched the physical play of LCWM all over the floor, as they searched for a chance to reel the game back in and earn their first win of the season in front of their home crowd for the final home game of the season.

“Like [Meyer] said, we played hard, but when the ball doesn’t go in the hoop you can’t win a game,” senior Brandon Wait said. “We can play defense, rebound well and be quick but without the shots you can not win the game.”

St. Marys’ Wait continued to say that “We are a competitive team that hasn’t won a game this season, and we want to win one before it is over. If the game is physical, we will be physical, we won’t give up or lay down.”

Labat led St. Mary’s with 22 points, scoring 12 points in the second half. Collin Ludewig had 13 points with 14 rebounds also for St. Mary’s.

St. Mary’s travels to Mankato-Loyola at 7:30 for the final game of regular season on Monday, for section 2A action.
