NEW ULM — The New Ulm Steel scored on all four of their power plays Saturday night as they downed Granite City 6-4 at the New Ulm Civic Center in an NA3HL game.

Alex Nagel scored two goals with Sam Storlie, Nick Wieben, Jarrett Cammarata and Kirk Coppock each adding a goal.

Trevor Woytcke had two assists with Nagel, Luc Kreuser, Storlie, and Max Kjome each adding assists.

A Nagel goal and goals from Wieben, Storlie and Coppock all came on power plays.

Woytcke would leave the game midway through the third period when he was accidentally cut by a skate in the neck area. New Ulm defenseman Stephen Mordini left in the first period when he was taken into the boards and had to be helped from the ice.

Brandon Baker scored twice for Granite City with Chase DiBari and Chris Beyer netting the other Lumberjacks’ scores.

New Ulm goalie Ryan Kenny stopped 40 of 44 Lumberjack shots while Granite City goalie David Mulligan halted 29 of 35 New Ulm shots.

The Steel now hold a 5-point lead over Granite City in the West Division with the win. Friday, they defeated the Lumberjacks 4-2 in Sauk Rapids.

“This was a pivotal part of our season against Granite City this weekend,” Steel coach Andrew Kolb said, as he saw his team improve to 24-8 on the year.

“A month ago, we were circling this weekend on our calendar. We got a huge win Friday there and tonight we got three power-play goals in the first period.”

Those power-play goals from Storlie, Wieben and Nagel were goals that the Lumberjacks never recovered from.

Up 3-0 after the first 20 minutes, Cammarata made it 4-0 at the 3:24 mark of the second period before the Lumberjacks’ Baker cut the lead to 4-1 at the 10:48 mark.

DiBari’s goal early in the third period cut the lead to 4-2. But an unassisted goal by Coppock less than a minute after DiBari’s score had the Steel back on top 5-2.

Beyer’s goal saw Granite City down 5-3.

But Nagel’s second power-play goal upped the Steel lead to 6-3. Granite City cut the lead to 6-4 with less than four minutes to go but got no closer.

“Special teams is a big part of hockey and it can be a pivotal part of the game,” Kolb said.

Saturday for the Steel, it was.
