MLC men and women both fall

Women’s basketball

St. Scholastica 58,

MLC 49

DULUTH — The Martin Luther College women’s basketball team struggled on the offensive end of the court in a 58-49 loss at St. Scholastica on Saturday.

The Knights struggled from the field to the tune of 26.2 percent, including making only two of 15 attempts from beyond the three-point arc.

The two teams battled back and forth in the first half, with a strong close to the second quarter pulling the Knights within 2 at 32-30 heading into the break.

The Saints started to pull away in the third quarter, outscoring MLC 18-10 to push their lead to 10 points. MLC gave itself a chance at a comeback by holding CSS to only 8 points in the fourth quarter, but the Knights were held to 9 points in the final stanza as the Saints finished with the nine-point win.

Grace Schultz led MLC with 14 points and eight rebounds, and also added two steals to pull within two of the MLC single-season record of 84 total steals.

Jade St. Germaine added 12 points and six rebounds. Kati Aguilar came off the bench to score 7 points.

MLC fell to 5-17 on the season and 3-10 in UMAC play in defeat. CSS improved to 11-10 overall and 7-6 in league play with the win.

The Knights will return to action at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday when they travel to Minnesota Morris.

Men’s basketball

St. Scholastica 93,

MLC 73

DULUTH — The Martin Luther College men’s basketball team was unable to slow down the St. Scholastica offense in a 93-73 loss on Saturday.

The Knights entered the game having won two straight games and played well early, leading by as many as 7 points in the first half. With just over six minutes to play before halftime, CSS started its big run, out-scoring the Knights 23-8 to take a 47-32 lead into the locker room.

The Saints continued to roll in the second half as they came out of the break with a 27-2 run to break the game open and secure the win.

CSS finished the game shooting 56.9 percent from the field and made 11 of 21 attempts from beyond the 3-point arc. MLC finished with good numbers on the offensive end, shooting 47.8 percent overall and going 9-20 from downtown.

Five players scored in double figures for MLC, led by Richard Eckmann with 18 points on 8-of-13 shooting. Austin DeNoyer and Nate Lindloff added 12 and 11 points respectively, while Ian Paulsen and Ethan Eisenmann scored 10 points apiece. Paulsen also led the team with seven rebounds and six assists.

MLC fell to 4-18 overall and 2-11 in UMAC play in defeat. CSS improved to 14-7 on the season and 10-3 in league play with the win.

The Knights will return to action at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday when they travel to Minnesota Morris.
