Area roundup: Cathedral girls roll past Madelia

New Ulm Cathedral 65, Madelia 26

NEW ULM — New Ulm Cathedral defeated Madelia on Friday in a nonconference girls’ basketball game.

Lauryn Franta led the Greyhounds with 14 points. Heidi Hoffman and Rose Hazuka each added 12 points and Becca Schwarz had 10 points.

Cara Teigum scored 8 points for Madelia.

Cathedral (4-15, 2-10) will play at St. James Area at 6 p.m. on Saturday.

Madelia (0-19) will travel to Lake Crystal-Wellcome Memorial on Monday.

GFW 54, Springfield 49

SPRINGFIELD — Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop defeated Springfield 54-49 on Friday in a Tomahawk Conference girls’ basketball game.

GFW was led by Maddy Elder, who scored 15 points.

Springfield’s leading scorer was Sydney Hauger, who scored 15 points.

GFW hosts Wabasso at 7:30 p.m. on Monday. Springfield plays at 7:30 p.m. on Monday at Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart.

Boys’ basketball

Waseca 89, New Ulm 59

WASECA — Waseca defeated New Ulm 89-59 on Friday in a Big South Conference boys’ basketball game.

New Ulm was led by Connor Foley, who scored 27 points and Reece Melby, who scored 16 points.

New Ulm (9-11, 5-5) plays at 7:30 p.m. on February 13 at Marshall. Waseca hosts Kasson-Mantorville at 7:30 p.m. on Monday.

Mt. Lake 85, Nicollet 64

NICOLLET — Mountain Lake Area defeated Nicollet 85-64 on Friday in a nonconference boys, basketball game.

Nicollet was led by Ean Thomson, who had 20 points, seven rebounds and six assists. Also for Nicollet, Riley Hulke had 14 points and six assists and Anthony Macias had 11 points.

Nicollet plays at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday at Le Sueur-Henderson.

RCW 62, RRC 50

LAMBERTON — Renville County West downed Red Rock Central on Friday in a nonconference boys’ basketball game.

Brady Rasmussen led RRC with 17 points and six rebounds while Spencer Halland added 16 points and nine rebounds.

RRC (12-6, 7-4) will host Murray County Central on Monday.
