NEW ULM — Maybe the players from Truman/Martin Luther/Granada-Huntley-East Chain saw the writing on the wall early in their game with New Ulm Cathedral.

The Greyhounds (15-5) made five of their first six shots from beyond the arc and ended up making 12 of 21 3-pointers as they jumped to a 34-13 halftime lead. That was all before going on to down the Jaguars 82-37 Thursday night in nonconference boys’ basketball.

Jon Zinniel led four Greyhounds in double figures with 20 points. Alex Hillesheim added 19, Nathan Hauser 18 and James Gillis 10.

Derek Schoen led the Jaguars (7-12) with 18 points.

For New Ulm Cathedral head coach Alan Woitas, it was a case of his team not forcing the 3s but taking them at advantageous times.

“I thought that we took them when we had good ball movement off of them,” Woitas said. “I am not sure we took a bad one all night. When we take good shots, this team will knock down a lot of them because they are pretty good shooters.”

3-pointers from Hauser and Zinniel moved the Greyhounds up 8-1 before Cathedral expanded that lead to 13-4 and then 18-7 on Hauser’s second 3 of the game.

Hauser’s third 3 and baskets from Hillesheim and and Zinniel made it a 25-9 Cathedral lead.

While the Greyhounds could not miss in the first 10 minutes of the game, it was the opposite for the Jaguars, who made just 5 of 16 shots from the floor, misfired on all nine 3-pointers and turned the ball over 12 times.

That allowed Cathedral to build up a 21- point lead at halftime.

“We got up and played some pretty good defense,” Woitas said. “We were locked into our assignments and our rotations were pretty good. And we were able to capitalize off of them and get some run outs for easy buckets.”

3-pointers from Jacob Manderfeld and James Gillis early in the second half had the Greyhounds holding a 44-16 lead.

Zinniel’s 3-pointer — Cathedral’s eighth of the game — saw the Greyhounds up 51-31 at the 13:30 mark.

The Jaguars got their best run of the game on a 10-4 spurt, but two 3-pointers from Hauser and one from James Gillis gave Cathedral a 67-37 lead.

Despite the easy win, Woitas said that he was concerned about this game.

“They have been playing some pretty good basketball,” Woitas said. “They beat JWP and lost to Cleveland in overtime.”

Jaydan Hotovec’s 3-pointer — Cathedral’s 12th of the night – put a capper on the contest.

“We have shot over 50 percent a few times,” Woitas said. “I do not know if this was our best. But I really liked the ball movement. We got the ball inside and were able to kick it out — we were able to attack the hoop. And we had four players in double figures.”

Cathedral plays at Sleepy Eye on Monday for conference action.
