Hauser looking for history; New Ulm girls’ hockey team surprised by shutout

Another local high school boys’ basketball player will have a possible chance to crack the career 1,000 point total this week.

New Ulm Cathedral’s Nate Hauser has 977 career points going into Friday’s home game against Springfield and then a road contest Tuesday at Wabasso.

When Hauser hits the 1,000 career point total, he will become the third New Ulm player to reach that goal this season.

Earlier in the season, New Ulm High School’s Connor Foley reached that mark for the Eagles boys’ team and Joey Batt broke the 1,000 career point total for the Eagles girls’ basketball team.

NEW ULM GIRLS SHUTOUT FOR FIRST TIME: The New Ulm Eagles girls’ hockey team had been averaging 6.2 goals per game this season — second only to Warroad’s 6.5 goals a game.

But last Friday night, the Eagles were blanked on the road by Hutchinson 2-0 in their 21st game of the season as they fell to 16-4-1 on the year before defeating Fairmont 11-0 on Tuesday.

It was the first time New Ulm had been shutout all year.

“We had a slow start,” Eagles coach Kristin Faber said of the loss to the Tigers. “We did not pay well in the first half of the game. There was a four-minute span early in the second period where we were standing around and were not playing aggressive and they got two goals. We threw everything at them the last half of the game — we played much better — and we ended with 39 shots on goal for the game. Their goalie was on fire.”

Faber said that she was surprised that her team got shutout.

“We had some unbelievable opportunities, especially in the third period — we started controlling the puck. We had some rebound chances.”

She said that the loss could hurt them later in the seedings for Section 2A. New Ulm was ranked first in the section by QRF ahead of Delano/Rockford and Hutchinson.

“I felt that this game was a two or a three seed game,” Faber said. “They (Hutch) have some of our sectional opponents (Delano/Rockford, Mound Westonka) on their schedule yet, so we will see if anything happens there.”

“It is about high school sports and getting your team ready at the right time,” added Faber. “I think that we can beat any team in our section when we play well. And when we play well, we are a great team.”

The Eagles currently have the most wins in the state Class A with 17, one game ahead of South St. Paul and Alexandria who currently have 16. They are second in the state in goals scored a game now at 6.0, are sixth in the state in goals allowed at 1.6 and are third in goal differential at 4.

The Eagles are 11-0 in Big South Conference games this year and they hope to continue their conference domination tonight at Waseca.
