Area Roundup: MVL girls top Springfield; CM/C girls win

Girls’ basketball

MVL 41, Springfield 37

NEW ULM — Minnesota Valley Lutheran defeated Springfield 41-37 on Friday in a Tomahawk Conference girls’ basketball game.

MVL was led by Maddy Spurgin, who had 18 points and six rebounds.

Springfield’s leading scorer was Sydney Hauger, who scored 24 points.

MVL (8-8) plays at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday at Martin County West. Springfield plays at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday at Cedar Mountain/Comfrey.

CM/C 66, GFW 65

FAIRFAX — Cedar Mountain/Comfrey edged Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop on Friday in a Tomahawk Conference girls’ basketball game.

Abby Jemmings and Lexi Toll each scored 18 points for CM/C. Miah Busse scored 18 points for GFW. Katelynn Firle added 15 points and 12 rebounds. Erin Haas had 14 points.

CM/C (10-4, 5-4) will host Springfield (6-9, 2-6) on Tuesday. GFW (11-5, 7-2) will play at New Ulm Cathedral (2-14, 1-8) on Tuesday.

St. Peter 59, New Ulm 37

ST. PETER — St. Peter defeated the New Ulm girls’ basketball team 59-37 in Big South Conference girls’ basketball on Friday. Iyanna Wieland led the Eagles with 13 points and Joey Batt finished with 11 points.

New Ulm (12-5, 4-3) hosts Belle Plaine on Monday.

Girls’ hockey

Hutchinson 2, New Ulm 0

HUTCHINSON — Hutchnson shut out New Ulm on Friday in a nonconference girls’ hockey contest.

Goaltender Cassie Reed had 14 saves for New Ulm. The Eagles had 39 shots on goal.

New Ulm (16-4-1, 10-0) will host Fairmont on Tuesday.

Gymnastics

New Ulm 138.7, St. James 102.875

ST. JAMES — New Ulm had a broke their season high score and defeated St. James 138.7-102.875 on Friday.

Sarah Longtin won the All-Around title with a score of 34.975.

Michelle Rosenhammer was first in vault with a score of 9.05 and Erika Ebert came in second with a score of 8.95.

Sarah Longtin and Emma Gauert tied for first in bars with a score of 8.225 and Kelsi Miller came in third with a score of 8.0.

Kaylee Hutchinson came in first in beam with a score of 8.825 and Michelle Rosenhammer came in second with a score of 8.6.

Sarah Longtin won the floor exercise with a score of 9.35 and Michelle Rosenhammer came in second with a score of 9.325.

New Ulm competes at 6:45 p.m. on Tuesday at St. Peter.

Boys’ basketball

Sleepy Eye 58, Wabasso 36

SLEEPY EYE — Sleepy Eye defeated Wabasso 58-36 on Friday in a Tomahawk Conference boys’ basketball game.

Sleepy Eye’s leading scorers were Kegan Heiderscheidt with 14 points, Ben Laffen with 13 points and Zach Haala with 11 points.

Wabasso was led by Brock Rohlik, who had 10 points and five rebounds. Also for Wabasso, Tony Franta had 7 points and six rebounds, Myles Zeug had 6 points and Colton Taylor also had 6 points.

Sleepy Eye plays at 7:30 p.m. on Monday at Truman/Martin Luther/Granada-Huntley-East Chain. Wabasso plays at 7:30 p.m. on Monday at Minnesota Valley Lutheran.

JWP 69, Madelia 47

JANESVILLE — Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton downed Madelia on Friday in a Valley Conference boys’ basketball game.

Logan Anderson led Madelia with 13 points and Andrew Arduser added 11 points.

Madelia (0-13, 0–7) will host Heron Lake-Okabena on Monday.
