Prep roundup: Springfield rolls over Wabasso in boys’ basketball

Springfield 74, Wabasso 24

SPRINGFIELD — Springfield remained perfect as the Tigers crushed Wabasso on Tuesday in a Tomahawk Conference boys’ basketball game.

Decker Scheffler led Springfield with 18 points and Isaac Fink added 16 points.

Myles Zeug scored 8 points for Wabasso.

Springfield (10-0, 5-0) will host Redwood Valley on Thursday.

Wabasso (1-9, 1-4) will play at Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart (3-6, 2-3) on Friday.

CM/C 73, BLHS 58

MORGAN — Cedar Mountain/Comfrey’s Eli Samuelson scored 20 points to lead the Cougars past Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart in Tomahawk Conference boys’ basketball action on Tuesday.

Dylan Hillesheim had 14 points and nine assists and Justin Lumbar had 12 points. Lewis Pendleton finished with nine points and six assists.

CM/C is at New Ulm Cathedral on Friday.

GFW 68, Nicollet 59

NICOLLET — Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop downed Nicollet on Tuesday in a nonconference boys’ basketball contest.

Martin Ortiz led GFW with 17 points, Kyle Huiras added 15 points and Zach Weber had 14 points.

Riley Hulke scored 32 points for Nicollet and Ean Thomsen added 18 points.

GFW (3-7, 2-3) will play at Sleepy Eye (5-6, 2-3) on Friday. Nicollet (8-5, 4-0) will host Mankato Loyola on Thursday.

RRC 64, Madelia 44

LAMBERTON — Red Rock Central topped Madelia on Tuesday in a nonconference boys’ basketball game.

Spencer Halland led RRC with 18 points, 13 rebounds and eight assists. Sam Hansen added 17 points (five of them were 3-pointers) and Brady Rasmussen added 14 points and four assists.

Logan Anderson scored 10 points for Madelia while Angel Zamora had 9 points.

RRC (8-2, 3-1) will play at Fulda on Thursday. Madelia (0-10, 0-4) will host Truman/Martin Luther/Granada-Huntley-East Chain on Thursday.

Girls’ basketball

Waseca 53, New Ulm 51

WASECA — Waseca defeated New Ulm in a Big South Conference girls’ basketball game on Tuesday.

Joey Batt led the Eagles with 23 points. Hannah Osborne and Iyanna Wieland each scored 7 for Eagles.

New Ulm hosts Blue Earth Area on Friday.

MCW 49, Nicollet 39

NICOLLET — Martin County West downed Nicollet on Tuesday in a Valley Conference girls’ basketball game.

Brooke Skrien led Nicollet with 16 points and Sidney Botker had 10 points.

Nicollet (8-5, 3-2) will play at St. Clair on Friday.

Prep wrestling

New Ulm goes 1-1 at Marshall

MARSHALL — New Ulm Area went 1-1 on Tuesday in prep wrestling action, defeating Quad County 48-18 before falling to Marshall 45-28.

Against Quad County, Carter Brandes got a pin at 106 in 1:04 and Jackson Bode pinned Luke Kluver in 58 seconds at 113. Jacob Bertrang earned an 11-2 major decision at 126 and Cole Ranweiler pinned Sam Ohliger in 1:41. Sean Howk earned a pin at 138 and Tanner Stark had a technical fall at 152.

Against Marshall, Brandes earned a major decision and Cole Ranweiler had another pin at 132 in 1:07. Stark also had a pin at 152.

RRC 63, Wabasso 51

WABASSO — Red Rock Central broke open a 2-point halftime lead and won a nonconference boys’ basketball game over Wabasso on Saturday.

Cooper Taylor scored 19 points to lead the Rabbits. Tony Franta had 13 points and seven assists. The Rabbits trailed 30-28 at halftime but RRC outscored Wabasso 33-23 in the second half.

Wabasso (1-9) is at Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart on Friday.
