Springfield picks up 1st win of the year
NEW ULM — Springfield earned its first victory of the season when it defeated New Ulm Cathedral 48-33 on Friday in a Tomahawk Conference girls’ basketball game.
Springfield’s Sydney Hauger scored a layup to give her team a 21-13 lead.
Cathedral’s Becca Schwarz dropped two free throws for a 21-15 halftime lead for the Tigers.
Springfield outscored Cathedral 10-4 the first five minutes of the second half. The Greyhounds played even with Springfield over the next five-minute span with both teams scoring 11 points apiece.
Schwarz scored a basket and one free throw for Cathedral while Samantha Richert hit a free throw for Springfield’s final point making it a 48-33 win for the Tigers.
Springfield head coach Dillon Schultz said it was a good team win for Springfield. He said the coaching staff has introduced a lot of new things and the team is still learning.
He credited Cathedral for being a scrappy team which caused the Tigers to have to earn the win.
Cathedral head coach Dave Wilfahrt said the Greyhounds need to come out and play the game more consistently both defensively and offensively. The team is still trying to find its chemistry, which is something Wilfahrt said may take to time to develop.
Hauger led all scorers with 15 points. Arynzi Rabb added 9 points and Platz had seven points for Springfield.
Rose Hazuka scored 11 points for Cathedral and Schwarz had seven points.
Springfield (1-3, 1-2) will play at Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s (5-0, 2-0) on Monday. Cathedral (0-4, 0-3) will host Wabasso (3-0, 3-0) on Tuesday.
