NEW ULM — Just enough offense and just enough defense.

Dani Weiss scored two goals and Molly Scheid added a solo score as the New Ulm Eagles girls’ hockey team moved to 5-0 in the Big South Conference and 7-2 overall with a 3-2 win over Marshall Thursday night at the New Ulm Civic Center.

Ali Beltz and Ashyton Wiltscheck each added assists and New Ulm goalie McKenna Strong won her second game in the nets in as many starts as she recorded 18 saves.

Rachel Van Kuelen and Izabella Hunsley scored the Tigers’ goals.

The Eagles fired 44 shots on Tigers’ freshman goalie Emma Klenken with her stopping 41 shots.

While it was a win for the Eagles, head coach Kristin Faber was not jumping up and down with the play of her team.

“We were not super thrilled with the effort or our all-around game today,” Faber said. “We were very sloppy — lack of puck control but we were able to get three in and held them off at the end.”

The Eagles, who play at Fairmont on Tuesday, held a 3-1 lead over the Tigers (3-5, 2-2) when they held off a Marshall comeback.

New Ulm’s Ally Steffensmeier was called for interference with 1:48 left in the game.

The Tigers did not pull their goalie for a 6-on-4 advantage but did manage to score with 33 seconds left on a Hunsley goal to cut the lead to a final 3-2.

“We need to be better than that,” Faber said. “We talked about not looking past Marshall. Looking at their last game they beat Luverne 3-0 but it is (a case) getting up for these conference games. When we play tougher teams we look incredible and then we come and play like we did tonight. We lacked control and good decisions. It is frustrating.”

It was also a game where the Tigers had a second period goal waived off when the net came off prior to the shot going across the line.

New Ulm grabbed a 1-0 lead at the 13:55 mark of the first period when Weiss scored off an assist from Beltz.

Scheid’s unassisted power play goal at the 16:46 mark of the second period had the Eagles up 2-0.

Weiss’s third period goal off-set Van Keulen’s score.

“McKenna made some nice saves tonight,” Faber said. “Some of them were unorthodox but she stopped enough to give us the ability to win.”
