NEW ULM — Connor Foley’s 28 points and 12 rebounds propelled New Ulm to a 63-52 Big South Conference win on Thursday. Matt Janke finished with 12 points.

Both teams started the game even with two lead changes and two ties. BEA grabbed its lone lead of the night at 9-7 on a Carter Bell basket.

Janke answered with a 3-pointer to give the Eagles a lead that they would not relinquish for the remainder of the contest.

New Ulm began to pull away by putting together a 9-0 run on a 3-pointer by Reece Melby, two inside baskets by Foley and two free throws by Melby.

The Eagles continued to outpace BEA and they held a 32-21 halftime advantage.

Jacob Vaske scored two inside baskets to close the gap to 39-31 early in the second half.

Austin Thielfoldt dropped a 3-pointer to make it 47-40. The Buccaneers used a half-court zone defense which helped them to remain in the game.

Foley scored five points on three free throws and an inside basket to stretch the Eagles to 52-40.

BEA also was able to score on a number of second-chance shots which resulted in points. BEA missed some close shots at key times towards the end of the game. The Buccaneers also didn’t make key free throws, which also hurt them.

Janke and Jaden Domeier each dropped two important free throws apiece to seal the victory for the Eagles.

New Ulm head coach Steve Foley said the Eagles had issues in dealing with the zone defense which caused them to hesitate.at time. He said they made the necessary adjustments, trusted their teammates and regained their groove.

New Ulm’s next game will be on Dec. 5 at Belle Plaine.
