UMAC honors Stein, 4 players from MLC football team

NEW ULM — Four members of the Martin Luther College football team were named Second Team All-UMAC on Wednesday.

Juniors Joshua Arndt and Joshua Frailing received the honor from the offense, while sophomore defenders Joseph Herrewig and Tristan Pankow were also named to the second team.

Coach Mark Stein was also recognized as the conference’s Coach of the Year.

Arndt finished the season as the Knights’ top receiver with 27 receptions for 681 yards and eight touchdowns. During UMAC play, he caught 25 passes for 651 yards and seven touchdowns, and led the conference with an average of 26.0 yards per catch. For his career, Arndt ranks first in program history with an average of 22.2 yards per reception. He also ranks third in program history with 18 career touchdowns, and fifth with 1,512 career receiving yards.

Frailing was a force as the team’s starting left guard and helped pave the way for the number three rushing attack in the conference (225.2 yards per game during UMAC play). The junior captain is a three-year starter and also helped the Knights finish fifth in total offense (372.3 yards per game) and sixth in points per game (25.4).

Herrewig started for the second straight season at cornerback and finished second in the UMAC with five interceptions. The sophomore also led the Knights with eight pass break-ups and finished third on the team with 55 tackles. Herrewig was also a force on special teams and scored on a 91-yard kickoff return, helping him to a team-best 22.3 yards per return average on kickoffs.

Pankow was a starting inside linebacker and led the Knights with 77 total tackles. He also finished second on the team with 7.5 tackles for loss and added one sack and three pass break-ups. During UMAC play, the sophomore finished eighth in the conference with 75 tackles.

Stein was named Coach of the Year after leading the Knights to a five-win improvement over its 2016 season. The Knights entered the season as one of the youngest teams in the UMAC and all of Division III with only five seniors, but Stein and his coaching staff helped them to a 5-5 finish overall and 4-5 record in UMAC play, good for tie for sixth place in the final league standings.

Senior Jacob Heyn was named the MLC recipient of the Sportsmanship Award, given to one player on each team who best exemplifies sportsmanship during the season.
