NEW ULM — Wabasso remained perfect as it blanked New Ulm Cathedral 38-0 on Friday in a Southwest District football game. It was Wabasso head coach Joe Kemp’s 100th career win in 13 seasons.

“Wabasso has a very good team,” Cathedral head coach Denny Lux said. “It’s the best team we’ve played all year. Our guys didn’t quit; our guys played hard the whole football game.”

Lux said the Greyhounds need to put this game behind it and move forward. He said the Rabbits outplayed his team in this game.

The Rabbits drew first blood on an 79-yard touchdown run by Cooper Taylor. Nick Altermatt tried to run for 2-point conversion, but the attempt failed.

Later, Cooper Taylor scored at 6:11 on a one-yard plunge. He kicked for the extra point for a 13-0 Rabbit advantage.

Altermatt ran 8 yards for Wabasso’s next score to make it 19-0.

The lead grew as Cooper Taylor scored on a 3-yard run and the Rabbits led 31-0 at halftime.

In the second half, Altermatt threw two key passes to Colton Taylor keeping a Wabasso drive alive. Jacobson scored from 1-yard out and Colton Taylor’s kick were the final points of the game.

Cooper Taylor rushed 18 times for 161 yards and three touchdowns. Altermatt rushed 10 times for 73 yards and two touchdowns and Kyle Jacobson rushed eight times for 43 yards and a touchdown. Colton Taylor added three rushes for 53 yards.

For Cathedral, Colton Braulick had 11 rushes for 39 yards and David Berg had seven rushes for 24 yard.

“We really preach going after the ball,” Wabasso head coach Joe Kemp said. “We try to strip the ball and go after it. Our front seven were really physical tonight.”

Wabasso (6-0) will host Murray County Central on Friday. New Ulm Cathedral (4-2) will play Tracy-Milroy-Balaton on Friday.
