Polesky finishes 3rd for SM/SE/NUC girls

SLEEPY EYE — Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s/Sleepy Eye/New Ulm Cathedral’s Brianna Polesky once again has her eyes on reaching the state cross-country meet. On Thursday, Polesky finished third overall in 20:49 for the Knights at their home meet at the Sleepy Eye Golf Course.

Lake Crystal-Wellcome Memorial/Nicollet won the team meet with 34 points, followed by Wabasso (81), Norwood-Young America (83), Minnesota Valley Lutheran (91), SM/SE/NUC (109), Sibley East (141), and Mankato Loyola (163).

LCWM/N’s MaKenna Thurston took first in 19:17.

Polesky led the Knights once again and she seemed to be motivated by the home course and home crowd.

“I always like home meets because more of the community comes out to support and it’s always nice to hear the cheering voices,” Polesky said. “The course today was a little different than it normally is because of all the rain, it’s too wet to run the back stretch.”

Polesky the season has been going well and she’s pleased with her performance at most of the meets.

“They’re going well, I’m having a great year and I’m glad they’re going well since it’s my last year,” she said.

Abby Nelson led MVL by finishing fourth overall in 21:11. Noelle Olson was eighth overall in 21:22 and Naomi Anderson was 17th in 22:52.

After Polesky, Abby Hagen was fifth overall for SM/SE/NUC (21:13) and Kira DeMaris was 30th in 24:08.

Elizabeth Alejandro led Sibley East by finishing 10th in 21:49 and Wabasso’s Lindsey Bernardy was 12th in 22:09.

On the boys’ side, Mankato Loyola dominated with a team score of 15. The Crusaders had the top five finishers. Mitchell Johnstone took first overall in 16:56 and teammate Landon Javens was second in 17:30. Minnesota Valley Lutheran’s Jakin Anderson finished sixth overall in 17:45 and Sibley East’s Jens Lundstrom was seventh in 17:50.

Loyola won the team meet with 15 points, followed by NYA (61), LCWM/N (109), Sibley East (112), SM/SE/NUC (125), MVL (130) and Wabasso (188).

Leading the way for the Knights was Isaac Nelson, who finished 15th overall in 18:36. Ethan Kirchberg was 22nd in 19:55 and Josh Hagen was 25th in 20:09.

After Anderson for MVL, Dylan Holtmeier was 24th in 20:01 and Andrew Black was 30th in 20:40. Vander Mathiowetz led Wabasso by finishing 21st in 19:54.
