New Ulm girls get late goal to top Loyola

MANKATO — The New Ulm girls’ soccer team got a late goal from Jessica Moellenhoff and defeated Mankato Loyola 1-0 on Tuesday in Big South Conference action.

Moellenhoff’s goal came at the 77th minute on an assist from Elle Cooper. The Eagles outshot the Crusaders 12-5 in the contest.

Caleigh Heck had five saves for the Eagles.

New Ulm (2-6-2) hosts Waseca at 6:45 p.m. on Thursday at New Ulm High School.

New Ulm 4, Waseca 3

WASECA — New Ulm defeated Waseca 4-3 in Big South Conference girls’ tennis action on Tuesday.

At first singles, Emma Maudal lost 7-5, 6-0 and Sara Guymon lost 6-2, 6-1 at No. 2 singles. Abby Hietala lost 6-1, 6-0 at third singles and Makiah Otto won 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 at No. 4 singles.

In doubles action, Jane Arnoldt and Abbie Frauenholtz won 3-6, 6-2, 6-0 at first doubles and Breanna Widmer and Shelby Haseman won 3-6, 6-3, 7-5 at No. 2 doubles. Kaila Brudelie and Bethany Janssen won 6-4, 6-1 at No. 3 doubles. New Ulm is at Blue Earth Area on Thursday.

St. Mary’s 3, Springfield 0

SPRINGFIELD — Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s swept Springfield 25-13, 25-19, 25-13 on Tuesday in a Tomahawk Conference volleyball match.

Brittany Rogotzke had 20 digs for Springfield. Brandi Platz added five kills and 19 digs. Arynzi Rabb had six set assists.

St. Mary’s did not report any stats to The Journal.

Springfield (0-11, 0-3) will travel to Wabasso (13-2, 3-0) on Thursday.

St. Mary’s (11-2, 2-0) will host Sleepy Eye (3-6) on Tuesday.

Sibley East 3, Cleveland 1

ARLINGTON — Sibley East defeated Cleveland 25-15, 25-20, 19-25, 25-22 on Tuesday in a nonconference volleyball match.

Sibley East was led by Rachel Rettmann who had 14 kills, 11 digs and two blocks. Also for Sibley East, Morgan Stearns had 22 set assists, 14 kills, four digs and a block. Taylor Brinkman had 24 set assists and six kills, and Madi Krentz had 10 digs, five kills and four service aces.

Sibley East hosts Le Sueur-Henderson at 7 p.m. on Thursday. Cleveland plays at Madelia on Thursday.

GFW 3, LP/HT 0

WINTHROP — Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop swept Lester Prairie/Holy Trinity 25-20, 25-12, 25-16 on Tuesday in a nonconference volleyball match.

Katelynn Firle had 10 kills, Emily Heimkes added six kills and Megan Palmer had five kills for GFW. Jordan Rettig had 22 set assists.

GFW (4-6, 1-0) will host Sleepy Eye (2-6, 1-1) on Thursday.

Late Monday

BOLD 3, GFW 2

WINTHROP — BOLD defeated Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop on Monday night in five sets, 27-25, 19-25, 17-25, 25-18, 15-11.

Haley Schwecke had six kills and eight blocks for GFW, while Miah Busse had 11 digs. Jordan Rettig had 25 set assists and nine service points, while Megan Palmer added 11 kills, nine digs, eight points and three set assists.

Also for GFW, Katelyn Firle had 13 kills, three blocks, nine digs and seven points, while Jen Woods had 17 service points.

Madelia 3, ML/GHEC/T 1

GRANADA — Madelia defeated Martin Luther/Granada-Huntley/East Chain/Truman on Tuesday in a Valley Conference volleyball match.

Lizzie Cooling had 50 set assists, 19 digs and seven kills. Carissa Caraway had 14 kills, five digs and three blocks. Alayna DeLaCruz added 12 kills. Briana Ardolf had 14 digs.

Madelia (5-6, 1-2) will host Cleveland on Thursday.
