Sibley East edges New Ulm in hard-fought battle

NEW ULM — Sibley East defeated New Ulm 4-3 in a nonconference girls’ tennis match on Monday. It was the third straight loss for the Eagles this season.

Head coach Dan Horsmon said that there were many well-played matches and he was very proud of the team.

Emma Maudal lost at No. 1 singles 6-1, 6-0. Sara Guyman lost 3-6, 6-2, 6-1 at No. 2 singles, Abby Heitala lost at No 3 singles 6-0, 6-1 and Makiah Otto lost at No. 4 singles 6-3, 6-1.

“The heat affected me somewhat. She was very good,” Otto said.

Abbey Frauenholtz and Jane Arnoldt won at No. 1 doubles 6-3, 6-1. Breanna Widmar and Shelby Haseman won 6-1, 4-6, 6-7 (7-3) at No. 2 doubles and Kailia Brudelle and Bethany Jannsen won at No 3 doubles 3-6, 7-5, 6-3.

Horsmon said the Widmar/Haseman match lasted for almost three hours.

“We left some tools in the tennis bag, and we were struggling with the heat,” Horsmon said.

New Ulm (3-3) will play at St. Peter on Tuesday in a Big South Conference match.
