Prep roundup: River Valley defeats New Ulm tennis, St. Mary’s volleyball sweeps MVL

River Valley 4, New Ulm 3

SLEEPY EYE — River Valley defeated New Ulm on Thursday in a Big South Conference tennis match.

Emma Maudal lost at No. 1 singles, 3-6, 6-0, 6-1, Sara Guymon lost at No. 2 singles 6-2, 6-2, Abby Hietala lost at No. 3 singles 6-0, 6-0 and Makih Otto lost at No. 4 singles 6-1, 6-0.

Jane Arnoldt and Abbie Frauenholtz won at No. 1 doubles 6-0, 6-1, Breanna Widmar and Shelby Haseman won at No 2 doubles 6-4, 6-4 and Kaila Brudelie and Bethany Janssen won at No. 3 doubles 6-0, 6-0.

New Ulm will host Sibley East on Monday.

Prep Volleyball

St. Mary’s 3, MVL 0

SLEEPY EYE — Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s defeated Minnesota Valley Lutheran 25-17, 25-22, 25-15 on Thursday in a Tomahawk Conference volleyball match.

St. Mary’s was led by Ali Benz who had 13 kills and 17 digs and Jody Hansen who had nine kills and 17 digs.

For MVL, Abby Riesgraf had 17 digs, Lauren Paulsen added 10 digs with nine kills. Maddie Pearson had 11 set assists and Hannah Marzinske had 11 digs and four kills.

St. Mary’s plays at Sleepy Eye at 9 a.m. on Saturday. MVL plays at Maple River at 7 p.m. on Tuesday.

Wabasso 3, CMC 1

WABASSO — Wabasso defeated Cedar Mountain/Comfrey 25-18, 25-16, 22-25, 25-20 in a Tomahawk Conference volleyball match.

Wabasso was led by Megan Rothmeier who had 22 digs, Maddy Guetter who had 16 digs, 22 kills and four blocks, and Jenna Frank who had 15 digs, four kills and 50 set assists.

For CM/C, Abby Jemmings had 31 set assists and nine digs and Natalie Lux had 12 kills and 13 digs. Makenzie Kerkhoff had nine kills and six digs and Erica Bock had seven kills and Lexi Toll had three blocks. Jordan Kevelin had 21 digs and Kylie Wersal had 20 digs.

Wabasso plays at BOLD on Monday. CM/C plays at Red Rock Central at 7 p.m. on Tuesday.

Madelia 3, JWP 0

JANESVILLE — Madelia defeated Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton 25-21, 25-19, 25-20 on Tuesday in a Valley Conference volleyball match.

Madelia was led by Maddie Mueller who had 16 kills. Also for Madelia, Carissa Caraway had 12 kills and two blocks and Lizzie Cooling had five kills and seven digs.

Madelia (2-2, 1-0) plays at Sleepy Eye at 9 a.m. on Saturday.

Cathedral 3, BLHS 1

HECTOR — New Ulm Cathedral defeated Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart 23-25, 25-16, 25-12, 25-22 on Tuesday in a Tomahawk conference volleyball game.

BLHS was led by Alyssa Peterson who had 11 kills and seven digs. Also for BLHS Jacxl Fernandez had one kill and 17 digs, and Keegan Hanson had 13 digs.

For Cathedral, Rose Hazuka had 19 kills and Jenna Helget had 32 set assists, 15 digs and six ace serves. Sarah Mohr had 11 digs and eight kills.

BLHS hosts Wabasso on Tuesday. Cathedral plays at Westbrook-Walnut Grove on Saturday.

Sleepy Eye 3,

Springfield 0

Sleepy Eye (1-2, 1-0 Tomahawk) swept Springfield (0-3, 0-1) on Thursday 25-14, 25-11, 25-11.

Madi Heiderscheidt had eight kills, three aces and four digs for the Indians, while Mya Ibberson added 11 kills and four blocks. Cassidy Hoffmann had 23 set assists and three aces also for Sleepy Eye.

Sleepy Eye hosts a tournament on Saturday, while Springfield travels to Westbrook on Saturday for a tournament.
