MLC men’s soccer drop home opener 2-1 to Gustavus Adolphus

NEW ULM — Martin Luther College men’s soccer dropped its home opener to Gustavus Adolphus College by the score of 2-1 on Wednesday.

The Knights played a double overtime game at Buena Vista Tuesday night, but showed no ill effects as they held the teams remained score less through 39 minutes of action.

Joseph Graumann put the Knights on the board in 40th minute off a long pass from Ethan Schultz give the Knights the lead. The goal was his second this season.

The Gusties tied the game right before the half on a goal in the 44th minute, and then scored the go ahead tally in the 64th minute.

The Knights did a strong job of keeping GAC outside the box for much of the day, allowing 33 total shots but only nine shots on goal. MLC keeper Caleb King stopped seven of the nine shots he faced.

Graumann and Schultz each finished with two total shots and one shot on goal for MLC.

The Knights fell to 0-2 on the season, while GAC improved to 3-0 following the win.

MLC will return to action on Saturday, September 9, when it plays Nebraska Wesleyan at Saint Mary’s University (Minn.). That game is scheduled to start at 12 p.m.

Men’s golf

Men finish seventh

ALEXANDRIA, Minn. — The Martin Luther College men’s golf team finished seventh at the UMAC Preview Tournament at Alexandra Golf Club on Wednesday.

The Knights finished the event with 357 total strokes. UW-Superior won the tournament with a total team score of 300 strokes, followed by Northwestern (302) and St. Scholastica (314).

Alex Lindemann and Ethan Jaeger tied for the team’s lowest score with matching rounds of 88, good for a tie for 28th place overall.

Zackary Zuberbier shot 90, while Tyler Roecker rounded out the top four for MLC with a round of 91.

The Knights will return to action on Tuesday, September 12, when they Les Bolstad Golf Club in a tournament hosted by North Central.

Women’s golf

Women finish sixth

ALEXANDRIA, Minn. — The Martin Luther College women’s golf team finished sixth at the UMAC Preview Tournament at Alexandria Golf Course on Wednesday.

The Knights finished the event with 438 total strokes, ten behind Bethany Lutheran for fifth at the event. St. Scholastica won the tournament with a total team score of 356 strokes, followed by Northwestern (373) and UW-Superior (382).

Alison Lindemann shot the lowest MLC round with a final score of 96. That tied for 16th on the individual leaderboard.

Elizabeth Mantz shot 105 for MLC, while Sydney Peterson and Katheryn Hansen shot 115 and 122, respectively.

The Knights will return to action on Tuesday, September 12, when they Les Bolstad Golf Club in a tournament hosted by North Central.

Volleyball

St. Catherine 3, MLC 0

ST. PAUL — The Martin Luther College volleyball team lost 3-0 at St. Catherine on Wednesday by the scores of 25-12, 25-13 and 25-14.

The Knights were unable to slow the Wildcats on the attack all night, as SCU hit .442 and recorded 40 kills against only six errors for the match.

MLC was unable to keep up on the other side, hitting .067 for the match and committing 19 errors.

Jade St. Germaine led MLC with eight kills. Hailey Stade recorded a team-best 13 assists.

MLC fell to 2-3 on the season following the loss. SCU improved to 3-2 with the win.

MLC will return to action on Friday, September 9, when they begin the two-day tournament at UW-Oshkosh. The Knights’ first match is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. against Lawrence.
