Cathedral begins season with 16-0 win at Lakeview

COTTONWOOD — New Ulm Cathedral beat Lakeview 16-0 in a Southwest District football game on Friday.

Colton Braulick led all ball carriers with 181 yards on 13 carries for two rushing touchdowns for the Greyhounds (1-0).

David Berg had 134 yards rushing on 17 carries. Josh Seidl had 24 yards on 10 carries and Nate Hauser had 44 yards on 11 carries.

On defense, B.J. Mages had eight tackles with one fumble recovery, while Andrew McClain had two tackles and an interception.

Cathedral plays Friday at Sleepy Eye.

Mayer Lutheran 35, MVL 6

MAYER — Mayer Lutheran defeated Minnesota Valley Lutheran on Friday in a Mid-Southeast District, West Subdistrict football game.

Austin Peterson had nine carries for 60 yards and Matt Munsen added six carries for 66 yards and one rushing TD.

MVL (0-1) will host Lester Prairie/Holy Trinity on Friday.

Ortonville 28, Springfield 25

ORTONVILLE — Ortonville scored the game-winning touchdown on a 45-yard pass to beat Springfield 28-25 in a Southwest District football game.

Decker Scheffler was 7 for 16 for 168 yards and one TD. Jordan Kieper had nine catches for 136 yards and one TD. Andrew Beckman had three catches for 98 yards and two TDs. Tim Rogotzke added a 25-yard field goal for Springfield (0-1).

Springfield will host Martin County Central on Friday.

Loyola 25, CM/C 14

MANKATO — Mankato Loyola defeated Cedar Mountain/Comfrey on Friday in a 9-man South District football game.

Eli Samuelson rushed 12 times for 88 yards and two touchdowns.

CM/C (0-1) will host Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s on Sept. 8.

Lanesboro 30, Madelia 18

LANESBORO — Madelia fell to Lanesboro 30-18 in a 9-man South District football game on Friday.

Josh Sletta had a 43-yard touchdown run for the Blackhawks (0-1), while Luke Hennis had a fumble recovery for a touchdown.

Madelia hosts Mankato Loyola on Friday.

Volleyball

Wabasso 3, RRC 1

WABASSO — Wabasso defeated Red Rock Central 21-25, 25-17, 25-21, 25-14 on Friday in a nonconference volleyball match.

Maddy Guetter had 23 kills and Gina Goblirsch added 10 kills for the Rabbits (2-0). Jenna Frank had 42 set assists.

Megan Rothmeier had 20 digs, Frank had 12 digs and Goblirsch added 11 digs.

Stats for the Falcons (0-2) were not submitted to The Journal.

Wabasso will host Cedar Mountain/Comfrey on Sept. 7. RRC will host Windom Area on Tuesday.

Football, from Thursday

Wabasso 25, Lac qui Parle Valley 24

MADISON — Wabasso squeaked out a season-opening win against Lac qui Parle Valley 25-24 on Thursday.

The Rabbits (1-0) trailed 24-19 until senior quarterback Nick Altermatt punched it in from 4 yards out. A failed 2-point conversion gave the Rabbits just a one-point lead, which they held onto until the final horn.

Altermatt led all runners with 107 yards rushing on 16 carries for two TDs. He was 7-for-11 passing for 121 yards and one TD.

Cooper Taylor rushed for 72 yards on 20 carries with three receptions for 48 yards and one receiving TD, while Colton Taylor rushed for 35 yards on three carries with one TD.

Defensively, senior linebacker Ty Kemp had six total tackles with an interception. Scott Zollner and Kody Kuehn both had 1.5 tackles for loss each.

Wabasso hosts Yellow Medicine East next Friday.
