LESTER PRAIRIE — Minnesota Valley Lutheran defeated Lester Prairie/Holy Trinity 25-20, 18-25, 25-23, 25-22 in a nonconference volleyball match on Thursday.

MVL was led by Haley Birkholz, who had 12 kills and 12 digs. Mackenzie Helget had 12 set assists, Maddie Pearson had 16 set assists and Hannah Marzinske had five kills and 18 digs.

MVL plays at 7 p.m. Tuesday at New Ulm Cathedral.

CM/C 3, Madelia 1

MADELIA — Cedar Mountain/Comfrey defeated Madelia 25-21, 25-19, 25-14, 21-25 in a nonconference volleyball match on Thursday.

Makenzie Kerkhoff led CM/C (2-0) with 22 kills and 13 digs. Erica Bock had nine kills, Natalie Lux had 10 kills and Jordan Kevelin had seven digs and three ace serves. Abby Jemmings had 45 set assists and nine digs.

For Madelia (0-2), Maddie Mueller had 11 kills and Alayna DeLaCruz and Carissa Caraway both had six kills apiece. Lizzie Cooling had 37 set assists.

CM/C plays at 7 p.m. on Thursday at Wabasso. Madelia plays at 7:15 p.m. Thursday at Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton.

St. Clair 3, GFW 0

ST. CLAIR — St. Clair defeated Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop 25-23, 25-11, 25-23 in a nonconference volleyball match on Thursday.

GFW was led by Megan Palmer who had two aces and seven kills. Also for GFW Jordan Rettig had three aces and 20 set assists, and Katelynn Firle had six kills.

GFW hosts Norwood-Young America at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.

BLHS 3, Central Minn. Christian 0

HECTOR — Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart beat Central Minnesota Christian 25-20, 25-23, 25-15 in a nonconference volleyball match on Thursday night.

Anna Buboltz helped lead the Mustangs’ offense with 12 set assists. Jacxi Fernandez and Rachel Dean had six kills apiece, while Alyssa Petersen had five kills. Keegan Hanson had 18 digs.

BLHS hosts New Ulm Cathedral on Thursday.

Football

Waseca 46, New Ulm 14

WASECA — New Ulm lost its season-opening game 46-14 to Waseca in a South Central District, Red Subdistrict football game on Thursday.

First-year quarterback Hunter Ranweiler was 10-for-17 passing for 125 yards and one TD. He also amassed 30 rushing yards on 11 carries for a rushing score for the Eagles (0-1) and Alex Portner had an 8-yard receiving TD.

Joe Fortwengler had 15 tackles, Brett Bianchi had 13 tackles and Luke Scheid had an interception.

New Ulm will have its season-opening home game next Friday against Worthington.

Girls’ soccer

Minnehaha Academy 4, New Ulm 1

MINNEAPOLIS — New Ulm lost 4-1 to Minnehaha Academy in a nonconference girls’ soccer game on Thursday.

The Eagles (0-2-2) had one shot on goal during the entire game — a shot that went in during the 21st minute of a second half. Elle Cooper scored the goal with an assist from Kaye Rysdahl.

New Ulm plays Tuesday at Waseca.

Girls’ tennis

Hutchinson 7, New Ulm 0

HUTCHINSON — New Ulm got swept by Hutchinson 7-0 in a nonconference girls’ tennis meet on Thursday.

Emma Maudal took the first set of her No. 1 singles match to extra points, but lost 7-5, 6-2. The No. 2 doubles team of Breanna Widmer and Shelby Haseman lost 6-3, 7-6 (7-3), 10-2. Kaila Brudelie and Bethany Janssen lost 7-6 (11-9), 7-5 at No. 3 doubles.

New Ulm plays River Valley next Thursday at Sleepy Eye.
