Essig edges Springfield 6-5 in 10 to begin playoffs

SPRINGFIELD — The Essig Bluejays edged the Springfield Tigers 6-5 in a 10-inning contest in Game 1 of a Tomahawk East League amateur baseball series on Friday.

Ben Wolf drove in E.J. Berdan for what turned out to be the game-winning run.

Tim Kehren got the win for the Bluejays in 2 2/3 innings of work. Jordan Guggisberg got the no-decision in 7 1/3 innings pitched.

Sam Baier got the loss in two innings of relief work for the Tigers, having given up one unearned run on two hits. Brandon Wilhelmi got the no-decision in five innings pitched, while Cole Chihak pitched three innings of setup work.

Carter Erickson was 3 for 4 with one RBI to lead the Tigers at the plate, while Pat Moriarty, Coltin Minkel and Cole Milbrath had two hits apiece.

Wolf, Jay Helget and Kyle Krzmarzick had two hits apiece for the Bluejays.
