MANKATO — Sleepy Eye VFW’s season ended with a 12-0 five-inning loss to Mankato AAA in an elimination game of the District 2 VFW baseball tournament on Friday at Mankato East High School.

Post 800 had one hit on the day — a triple off the right-center wall by Jacob Berg in the top of the second inning. The Royals’ infield did a sufficient job in holding Berg at third, however, in getting the outs needed to keep him stranded.

Jace Marotz got the loss for Sleepy Eye in 3 1/3 innings of work. He gave up 12 runs, seven earned on 10 hits.

Mankato attacked Marotz and Co. consistently in taking a 5-0 lead after three complete innings. In the bottom of the fourth, Mankato got more than it needed to essentially put the game away with seven runs on six hits, forcing Sleepy Eye coach Brandon Streich to make a switch from Marotz to Luke Mielke, who gave up two hits in allowing Marotz’s final three base runners to score.

Lucas Warner shut the door in the top of the fifth for Travis Noren, who got the win in four innings pitched.
