NEW ULM — After New Ulm VFW Gold lost a tough 2-0 game to Dassel Thursday night, there was a question on how New Ulm would respond.

The answer did not take long.

New Ulm scored twice in both the first and second innings and then added four runs in the third as Gold put it in cruise control after that en route to a 12-2 win over Glencoe.

The game was stopped after six innings because of the 10-run lead rule.

Aaron Portner got the win for New Ulm. The lefthander allowed just three hits and fanned five.

Isaiah Streich took the loss for Glencoe. He went 2 2/3 innings and was charged with eight runs.

Jaden Domeier led the 17-hit New Ulm attack with four hits. Mason Cox, Braden Zimmermann and Noah Hauge each had three hits. Domeier, Zimmermann Teddy Giefer and Hauge each drove in two runs.

New Ulm now plays at 4 p.m. Saturday at Johnson Park.

“We took a little frustration out from last night with 17 hits today,” New Ulm coach Mike Munce said. “We came out and knocked the ball around pretty good.”

In Thursday night’s contest against Dassel, New Ulm had just three hits in the game. Friday, it had four hits in the first inning when it scored two runs.

Domeier and Cox both singled to start the inning. RBI singles from Zimmermann and Josh Seidl got New Ulm on the board.

In the second inning, consecutive one-out singles from Noah Hauge, Teagan Kamm, Domeier and Cox lifted Gold to a 4-0 lead.

In two innings, New Ulm had eight hits on the board.

“This just shows what this team is capable of doing,” Munce said. “We had a good meeting after the loss and came back ready to play.”

Glencoe got its only runs of the game in the top of the third when it tallied two runs on an error and a Andrew Wraspir double.

But New Ulm responded with four runs in the bottom of the inning. Seidl walked and stole second. He scored on a Giefer triple to left. Giefer came home on a Hauge single and Kamm singled. Both came home on a Domeier base hit.

“We were ready to go today,” said Munce, who was especially happy with the production from his eight and nine hitters in the line-up, Hauge and Kamm. The two combined for five hits.

The run support made Portner’s job on the mound easier.

“Aaron did a nice job for us,” Munce said. “He kept them off-balance and our batters took care of the rest.”
