NEW ULM — With five errors by each team, it was not an example of textbook baseball.

But in the end, New Ulm Gold’s offense was too much.

New Ulm Gold spotted Sleepy Eye a quick 2-0 lead on three errors before Gold outscored Post 7 to come away with a 10-3 win Monday night at Mueller Park.

Andrew Peters, the second of three pitchers used by New Ulm in the game, got the win as Gold improved to 8-4 on the season.

Peters took over for starter Brandon Mehlhop, who went the first three innings and allowed all three runs. A.J. Lassas closed out the seventh inning.

Matt Mielke took the loss for Post 7 (1-8). Mielke went all seven innings and allowed 13 New Ulm hits.

Hunter Ranweiler had three hits for New Ulm with J.T. Hoffmann, Copper Yackley and Andrew Peters each adding two hits. Yackley, Ranweiler and Peters each drove in two runs.

The combined 10 errors accounted for a combined six unearned runs in the game.

“We started off a little slow which has been the trend lately,” New Ulm assistant coach Mikale Gustafson said. “But at least it was only one inning. We picked it up — scored some runs — and got the lead back and never looked back after that.”

Sleepy Eye head coach John Mielke said that his team competed better.

“We had some opportunities to push some runs across but could not get it done,” Mielke said “But we are improving.”

After Post 7 scored twice in the top of the first on two of the errors and a Carter Brinkmann RBI single to right field, Gold matched that in the bottom of the inning on one hit and two Sleepy Eye error.

Hoffmann walked and stole second. Cooper Yackley was hit by a pitch. Hunter Ranweiler reached on a bunt single with Hoffmann scoring on a throwing error. A Lassas groundout scored Yackley.

Post 7 plated its final run of the game in the third thanks to singles from Nick Helget and Brinkmann and another error.

But that would be the last run allowed by Gold pitchers in the game.

Gold scored twice in the fifth after two were out. Alex Lund reached on an error and Hoffmann singled. A wild pitch moved up both runners before Cooper Yackley singled them both in for a 4-3 New Ulm lead.

New Ulm increased its lead to 5-3 n the fifth thanks to another Post 7 error.

“Errors and walks have been a problem for us,” Mielke said. “We got a pretty decent pitching performance that kept us in the game. And big innings are dangerous for us.”

And that happened when New Ulm put a five spot on the board in the sixth.

A single from Hoffmann, a Yackley double and singles from Ranweiler and Lassas made it 7-3. An error, a double steal, a walk and a Peters’ single moved Gold into a 10-3 lead.

For Gold, this was their seventh game in nine days but Gustafson felt that his team’s arms were pretty good.

“We had a couple that had sore arms,” he said. “But we are off now until Thursday (for the Upper Midwest Classic). We rested Cole (Wellmann) and Kasey (Kuck). Thursday may be our second game of the year where we have our full squad and all arms should be ready to go.”
