Sleepy Eye VFW gets knocked out

NEW ULM — After starting the Junior Upper Midwest Classic with a 2-0 mark, Sleepy Eye VFW went 0-2 on Saturday and was eliminated from Sunday’s bracket play.

Osseo defeated Sleepy Eye 12-1 in Essig in the first game and New Ulm Gold defeated Sleepy Eye 2-1 in eight innings in the second game at Johnson Park.

In the loss to Osseo, Nick Labat was 2 for 3 and scored the lone run. Dallas Bauer took the loss, allowing eight runs in five innings. He walked six and struck out four.

Seamus Reese was 3 for 4 for Osseo with two RBIs.

Gold’s Alex Hillesheim went the distance to earn the win. He allowed just two hits and struck out three. Gold scored a single run in the eighth inning to pick up the victory and Braden Zimmerman had two hits for New Ulm.

Jace Marotz took the loss in the second game. He allowed two runs in 7 1/3 innings. He walked six and struck out three.
