NEW ULM — Despite jumping out to a 3-0 lead to start the game, things quickly turned sour for New Ulm VFW Silver.

Maple Grove scored 14 unanswered runs and handed Silver its second loss of the tournament. Maple Grove improved its Junior Upper Midwest Classic Tournament record to 2-0 after defeating Wayzata earlier on Friday with a 14-3, 6-inning thumping of Silver at Johnson Park.

Matt Rieger took the loss for Silver. He went 4 2/3 innings and allowed seven runs on eight hits. William Schabert allowed seven runs in 1 1/3 innings for Silver.

Blake Burgeson overcame a tough start in the first inning and went the distance for Maple Grove. He allowed four hits and three runs in six innings.

New Ulm scored three times in the first. Tony Geiger’s RBI double scored Jackson Bode and Cole Backer scored on a passed ball to make it 2-0. Geiger later scored from third on a double play for New Ulm’s final run.

Maple Grove got on the board in the third inning, scoring four times. J.T. House had an RBI double in the inning and Maple Grove took advantage of a double steal to eventually grab a 4-3 lead.

Maple Grove scored three more times in the fifth inning to open up the game, then seven times in the sixth inning for the final 14-3 margin.

Silver plays Luverne at 10 a.m. at Mueller Park on Saturday and Wayzata at 4:30 p.m. at Johnson Park.
