NEW ULM — Having come close a couple of times, Andrew Peter came through in his third try.

Peter won a playoff with Ethan Kraus on the 10th hole to claim his first New Ulm Invitational Championship Flight trophy. Peter finished the day with a 184 after 27 holes on Sunday and was happy to be hoisting the trophy. It was the second year in a row that Kraus lost on a playoff, losing to Johnny Larson the year before.

Peter, a 25-year old from Decorah, Iowa and Luther College graduate, finished second and fifth in his previous two tries.

“I’ve been kind of close, I enjoy the course and I had some good shots,” Peter said.

Kraus and Peter went to the 10th hole for the playoff. There, Peter emerged as the victor after both struggled on the drive.

“Neither of us hit great tee shots, mine was left of the pin. I just happened to catch a nice lie and thankfully the putt went in,” Peter said. “Putting’s been a little bit of a struggle lately so thankfully it went in when it had to.”

Glavine Schugel celebrated his 16th birthday on Sunday but wasn’t able to capture the event in his first try. He was one of three players who shared the lead entering play on Sunday with Peter and Brian Patterson. Schugel and Jason Wieland finished tied for third with a 186.

New Ulm High School graduate and Minnesota State University, Mankato, golfer Kelton Schmitz won the President’s Flight with a 153, ahead of another New Ulm Invitational veteran Jimmy Fromm, who shot a 157.

Dan Janke took home the title in the First Flight with a 159, and Jeff Anderson won the Second Flight with a 162.

Peter Kliber clamied the Third Flight with a 165 and Joe Hoffman won the Fourth Flight (143).

Jim Hannegan won the Senior A Flight (143) and Don Olson won the Senior B Flight (134).
