NEW ULM — While the heat and wind seemed to be the main obstacle on Saturday at the New Ulm Invitational, three battled their way to the top of the leaderboard in the championship flight with a 74.

Brian Patterson, Andrew Peter and New Ulm High School sophomore-to-be Glavine Schugel all shared the lead after Day 1 with the 74.

Schugel has seen the big names before at the tournament. But his day on Saturday showed he can be competitive with the veterans of the course.

“It’s pretty special, it’s fun to be out there watching them play, seeing how they can hit the ball, what they can do with it,” Schugel said. “It’s fun to watch.”

He said the wind made it a challenge.

“It was extremely windy, you get one down wind and it goes forever and then you go against it and it goes absolutely nowhere,” Schugel said.

Schugel’s score especially stood out among the veteran golfers because he just completed his freshman year at New Ulm High School. On Tuesday, Schugel and the rest of the New Ulm boys’ golf team will compete at the Class AA State Tournament in Jordan.

“It’s really exciting, I’m really looking forward to it and hopefully I can do what I know what I can do and shoot some good scores,” Schugel said.

On Sunday, however, he will attempt to become the youngest player to win the Invitational. Regardless, it wasn’t a bad weekend for the 15-year old.

“I’m just gonna try to enjoy the walk and take it hole-by-hole, hopefully get a good score,” he said.

Another familiar name, Jason Wieland, sits one stroke back heading into Day 2 with a 75. He’s tied with Fred Kraus in that spot.

Nate Weisenburger, Colin Huffman, Andrew Metzen and Scott Paa all turned in a 77. Johnny Larson, the six-time Invitational champion and defending champion, heads into Day 2 with a 79.

Dan Janke, the New Ulm boys’ golf coach, leads the First Flight with a score of 79, one stroke ahead of Dave Keinz (80). Jeff Anderson leads the Second Flight (78) and Peter Kliber has a two-stroke lead in the Third Flight with an 80 over Craig Spelbrink (82).

Anthony Sanders and Ryan Galvin share the lead in the Fourth Flight at 71.

John Campbell is the leader in the Senior A Flight with a 75 and Don Olson leads the Senior B Flight with a score of 67.

The tournament resumes at 7:30 a.m. on Sunday and the championship round for the Championship Flight begins around 4 p.m.
