Helget, Wersal hit career milestones

ST. JAMES – New Ulm Cathedral’s Jenna Helget recorded her 1,000th career set assist as Cathedral went 4-1 at the St. James tournament on Saturday.

Cathedral finished first in its pool, beating Le Sueur-Henderson, Worthington and St. James. In bracket play Cathedral beat Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart and then lost to LSH in the championship game.

Helget tallied 90 set assists for the day and 47 digs. Rose Hazuka recorded 36 kills, Annie Roufs had 21 kills and 45 digs and Becca Schwarz had 22 kills. Nicole Gangelhoff had 58 digs on the day.

Cathedral is at Springfield on Tuesday.

Springfield goes 2-2 at tournament

GAYLORD – Springfield’s Callie Wersal recorded her 1,000th career set assist on Saturday as her team went 2-2 at the Sibley East tournament.

Wersal finished the day with 63 set assists.

Springfield defeated Nicollet and Sibley East 2-0 and lost to Glencoe-Silver Lake and Norwood Young America.

Vishe Rabb had 32 kills and Kenna Wahl had 15 kills for the Tigers. Rabb also had five blocks and Wahl had 16 digs. Wersal also had 15 digs.

Wabasso goes 3-0 at tournament

BURNSVILLE – Wabasso won the Class A Silver bracket at the Burnsville on Saturday.

Wabasso defeated Legacy Christian, Kimball and Wabasha-Kellogg. Maddy Guetter finished with 56 kills and 47 digs and Gina Goblirsch had 33 kills and 37 digs. Lainy Rohlik finished with 114 set assists and 38 digs and Jenna Frank had 36 digs.

Wabasso hosts Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart on Tuesday.

Prep football

New Ulm 39, St. Peter 20

ST. PETER – New Ulm defeated St. Peter 39-20 on Saturday in prep football action.

Jordan Hillesheim started the New Ulm scoring with a 4-yard touchdown run in the first quarter and he later had a 78-yard touchdown reception from Alex Portner. Hillesheim had an 82-yard touchdown run in the third quarter and Cooper Yackley hauled in a 10-yard pass fro Portner in the third.

Yackley then had an 87-yard touchdown return on the kickoff and a 75-yard touchdown on another kickoff.

Max Deslauriers and Luke Scheid each had an interception and Connor Gag was also big on defense with three tackles for a loss.

New Ulm has homecoming on Friday when it hosts Belle Plaine on its new field at the high school
