Ask Marilyn: Why Are People Superstitious?

John Stratton of Baltimore, Maryland, writes:

Marilyn: You have stated that you're not superstitious. I'm not superstitious, either, but many people are. Why do many people have superstitions?

Marilyn responds:

Most superstitions are learned during childhood. (I didn't learn any: My parents had no superstitions.) If these people don't get a solid foundation in science while they're still in school—which should get rid of most, if not all, superstitions—they may be stuck with them for life.
