ST. BONIFACIUS - The Martin Luther College women's basketball team turned in a dominant performance on the way to a 97-57 Upper Midwest Athletic Conference win at Crown College Saturday.
The Knights came out of the gates strong, building a 33-21 lead in the first 13 minutes of play, and then put the Storm away with a 17-0 run over the next five minutes on the way to a 54-27 halftime lead.
Alyssa Maertz finished as the leading scorer for the Knights with a career-best 18 points off the bench.
First-year forward Mariah Schoof joined her in double figures off the bench with 15 points, while Leah Nass and Brittney Gossen paced the starters with 13 and 11 points, respectively.
MLC improved to 8-9 on the season and 5-2 in the UMAC with the win, while Crown fell to 1-15 overall and 0-7 in league play in defeat.
The Knights will return to action at 5:30 p.m. Tuesdaywhen they travel to Bethany Lutheran College.
MLC Men Lose Shootout at Crown
ST. BONIFACIUS - The MLC men's basketball team lost a high-scoring affair at Crown College Saturday by the score of 92-84.
Both teams were efficient on the offensive end, with the Knights shooting 53.3 percent from the floor while Crown shot 52.9 percent. The two teams also took care of the ball, combining for only 21 turnovers in the game.
The two teams traded the lead several times in the first half before the Storm was able to take control late in the half on the way to a 43-42 halftime lead.
MLC finished with four players in double figures, led by Galen Holzhueter's 26 points. Luke Rothe finished with 21 points to go with eight assists and seven rebounds, while Mike Paulsen and Todd Brassow joined them in double figures with 14 and 10 points, apiece.
MLC fell to 4-14 overall and 3-4 in the UMAC with the loss. The Knights will return to action at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Bethany Lutheran.
