SHEBOYGAN, Wis. - The Martin Luther College men's basketball team lost its season opener at Lakeland College by the score of 92-77.

The Muskies took control of the game late in the first half after a back-and-forth start, taking a 49-39 lead into halftime.

The Knights kept within striking distance in the second half despite struggling offensively throughout the game. MLC finished the night 25-of-73 from the floor and 2-of-20 from beyond the three-point arc, but still trailed by only eight points with 2:43 left to play thanks to a 25-37 night from the free throw line and 16 forced turnovers on defense.

Lakeland pulled away at the end, however, finishing the game on a 9-2 run over the final minutes to come out with the win.

Galen Holzhueter finished as the Knights' leading scorer with 22 points and also grabbed 10 rebounds and four steals. Luke Rothe struggled from the field, but still finished with 20 points and a team-high six assists. Todd Brassow was the third player in double figures for the Knights with 12 points.

The Knights will finish their season-opening trip with a game at Marian at 4 p.m. Saturday.
