NEW ULM - While St. James continues to be the class of the South Central Conference in girls tennis on a yearly basis, Fairmont showed that it too can field a pretty good squad.
The Cardinals improved to 10-2 on the season, defeating New Ulm 7-0 Thursday in SCC action.
The Cardinals were dominant in all of the matches and they didn't take too long in putting the Eagles away.
At first singles, Fairmont's Allison Moeller defeated New Ulm's Mya Sarkar 6-0, 6-1. Moeller mixed up her shots well and had a tough serve. That mix was enough to defeat the New Ulm sophomore.
"It just wasn't my day today," Sarkar said. "She covered a lot of ground and her serves were nice."
New Ulm's Taylor Bolduan also had a tough time, losing to Fairmont's Sophie Shelgren at No. 2 singles 6-3, 6-4.
New Ulm's top doubles duo of Emma Vranich and Graclyn Sarkar also lost, 6-0, 6-1.
While the loss may have been frustrating to some of the Eagles, Mya Sarkar has seen a lot of improvement from the young squad.
"They're progressing, definitely," Sarkar said. "I can see a lot of good players."
The Eagles host Marshall and Albert Lea on Saturday.
