Double Anniversary Celebration to be a blast

NEW ULM - The Double Anniversary Celebration for the 125th Anniversary of the Hermann Monument Cornerstone and the 150th Anniversary of the New Ulm Battery is expected to be a blast this Saturday, with steady stream of cannon fire and live music throughout the day, capped by a fireworks show over the Hermann Monument in the evening..

The events begin at Hermann Heights Park at 10 a.m. with the firing of the New Ulm Battery's cannons for its fundraiser event. The fundraiser involved people donating $100 for the opportunity to fire the cannon and being able to keeping the firing pin. The firings will run from 10 a.m. to noon, then continue with firings scheduled around the remaining events. Tours of the Hermann Monument will be held from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

A formal program for the event will be held at noon. New Ulm Mayor Bob Beusmann will read off several congratulatory message he received for the cornerstone anniversary. Local historian Denny Warta will also give a presentation to the New Ulm Battery for is 150th anniversary. Finally, Aline Anliker, the Executive Director of the Minnesota chapter of the German American Chamber of Commerce of the Midwest, will be given an opportunity to speak if she wishes.

Live music at Hermann Heights will be provided the Original German Band from 12:30 to 1:45 p.m., the Concord Singers from 2:15 to 3:15 p.m. and the Schell's Hobo Band from 3:45 to 5:45 p.m. Down the hill at Harman Park, the band Jonah and the Whales will perform from 8:45 to 11: 45 p.m.

Later in the day, a re-dedication ceremony will be held at 3:20 p.m. at the Hermann Monument cornerstone. Warta will be leading the event. Udo Huefner, Grand Leader with the Order of the Sons of Hermann in California, is scheduled to give a presentation. Additionally, a congratulatory letter by Allan Preuss, president of the Order of the Sons of Hermann in Hermann, Texas, will be read. Finally, Louis Godeke, granddaughter of Julius Berndt Sr., will say a few words.

Hermann Height park will be closed at 5:45 p.m. to prepare for the fireworks display. Entertainment, food stands and booths will begin down the hill at Harman Park at 4:30 p.m.

The big show in the evening will be "Thunder in the Valley," with the New Ulm Municipal Band, augmented by students from Martin Luther College, performing the 1812 Overture, complete with an 11-cannon accompaniment by the Battery. The concert will begin at 6 p.m. and the large fireworks display from Hermann Heights over the Harman Park area will begin at 8:30 p.m.

Visitors are strongly encouraged to bring their own seating due to the limited picnic tables currently available.
