Eagle Update: Getting ready for the school year

August 20, 2013
By Jeff Bertrang - ISD 88 Superintendent , The Journal

There are many activities occurring the next couple of weeks as we swing into the new school year. Many teachers can be found preparing their classrooms and getting their materials ready. Our paraprofessionals have received updated training on the proper techniques to use when responding to students in crisis. Our food service staff met last week to train on proper kitchen safety, food preparation and the updated nutritional guidelines. This week our technology department is hosting technology sessions for our staff members to gain additional skills before the start of the school year.

The custodial staff is closing in on the end of another hectic and fruitful summer. There were many projects at each of our buildings that needed attention and care so the buildings would be ready for students this fall. Each year we look at what is needed to make our buildings safe, meet all the required codes and allow for the different learning activities to happen. Maintaining facilities is an investment for the future.

Next week our staff will be in the buildings attending meetings, collaborating with their peers on goals for the year, discussing curriculum content and ensuring that their classrooms are ready for students. Open houses have been planned that offer parents an opportunity to meet with teachers and see the buildings.

The school board continues to work on strategic planning planning what District 88 should focus time and resources on in the next 2-5 years. As we continue down this path, we need to look at all of our programs to see if they are meeting the needs of our students and our communities. Facilities continue to be a topic of conversation and we need to chart a path that makes sense for the next 10 years. Our connections with our business, industry, non-public schools and civic organizations need to be evaluated to see if we are doing our part and working together.

Education isn't just about today; it's about today, tomorrow and well into the future. Working together is required if we are going to prepare all of our students for their future.
